Reports describe great damage from spring floods across New York State. Bridges swept away, travel impeded, and ice jams threaten Albany area and downstream villages along the Hudson, Mohawk, and Delaware & Hudson lines with widespread disruption.
The House of Commons debated the Irish crimes act amendment with Attorney General Holmes defending its measures while Rt Hon Hugh E Childers opposed coercive provisions. He urged caution that reform apply nationally and warned against trial shifts to England. Sir George Trevelyan criticized penal clauses as failings.
Fire in St Augustine Florida at 3 am burned the St Augustine Hotel to ground and swept to the cathedral and other buildings. Losses estimated at 250000 with many structures damaged or destroyed including the county court house and planters hotel. one life, Bridget Barry, reported missing after attempting to save clothing.

Providence April 12 There is keen interest in the election results with Democrats advancing and Republicans lamenting lost control. The piece notes shifts in Rhode Island politics, calls for reform of the registry, property qualification, and a coming Democratic takeover including reorganized House and Senate and over 200 offices to fill at the May Newport session.
