Fairy Island for Charles River Plan Proposed by Boston Architects

The Boston Society of Architects proposes a long narrow island in the Charles River Basin to beautify Back Bay. It would stretch from opposite the Fens toward Berkeley Street, 800 to 900 feet wide, with a park and civic buildings at its center. A redesigned Harvard Bridge and a new Cambridge-end bridge could link Boston and Kendall Square, with cross channels and small bridges for foot and carriage travel. The plan suggests preserving about 900 feet of open water on the Boston side and 500 feet on the Cambridge side, creating a restful vista with an ornamental backdrop. The island project is likely to be included in a forthcoming pamphlet from the architects.
