The crew of the British brig Laura, captured by westerly hurricanes after leaving Fowey Jan 30 for New York, were rescued 200 miles southeast of Cape Charles and arrived in port today aboard the Norwegian bark New York. Captain Townsend said the Laura had fourteen feet of water in the hold and was a complete wreck. The rescued crew will be cared for by the British consul.
In Provence on April 10 Democrats carried Newport on a second trial for two House seats and a Senator. They also won a Senator and representative on a second trial at East Greenwich, but lost a Warwick representative on a second trial. The results give Democrats a three seat House majority and a 19 to 15 Senate split, with Republicans in disarray as control slips away.
An alarm from Box 262 reported grass fire near Marcella street at 2 35 yesterday afternoon. At 8 82 yesterday evening a wood fire on Centre street near Box 564 triggered another alarm. Damage trifling. At 1 30 yesterday afternoon three carboys of nitric acid in front of Cutler Bros store at No 10 Hamilton street ignited likely from spontaneous combustion, but Captain Dearing and Protective Company No 1 prevented spread to nearby carboys.

In Maumee Ohio Maumee rolling mill complex burned. loss about 300000, insured 80000. about 200 workers, plans to hire up to 600. In Setauket New York woodland fire threatened Crane Neck estate and several homes. In Albany New York Ransom & Co stove works destroyed. loss around 25000, insured 14000.
Aupany New York April 10 reports a rumor that Palatine Bridge in Aupany county has suffered a major washout and extensive flooding. The village is a summer resort with many fine homes, making potential damage likely to be sizable if confirmed.
A Boston meeting is planned at the St Botolph Club to launch an Authors Club. Rev Arthur Eaton organized the effort with support from Holmes Lowell Aldrich Howells and others.
