Sorrento reports the novelist F Marion Crawford died at 7 30 tonight after a period of illness marked by fevers and bronchial pleuritic complications. Professor Enrico di Renzi of the University of Naples clinic had been called to consult about ten days earlier.
Charles S. Parker artist of 228 Commonwealth avenue and 711 Boylston street studio was named main beneficiary of Mrs Harriet G Hill's $20 000 estate in Boston. Probate Judge Grant approved the will after a brief hearing despite relatives contest. Parker, once schoolmates with Hill's husband, received the large bequest as a surprise.
Highlanders receive medical clearance and are set to play in Washington on Monday.
Five inmates escaped Charlestown naval prison after prying apart bathroom bars and sliding down a rope from the third floor. Guards failed to stop them as they left the grounds near Chelsea Bridge. Their gray suits were found in cells, suggesting they donned disguises.
Complicity among prison staff was evident says officers. One guard was stripped of his uniform and jailed. A sergeant, two corporals and 17 privates were placed under surveillance pending a morning inquiry. Fugitives include James J. Fitzgerald and John P. Trogan among others. George Ross and Thomas McGarvey also named. James Robbins remains in custody awaiting court martial. Boston police joined the nationwide hunt.
An unknown assailant fired at Herbert S. Parents night clerk of the lodge in the City Hospital outpatient area on Harrison avenue. The shot missed and the gunman fled. a second man followed and both escaped into the yard as Patrolman Mullen investigated. Police deem it a vengeance motive with no robbery involved.
Louis F. Burnham and Raymond R. Smith were badly bruised when a gasoline tank exploded in an automobile on Woerd Street near the Waltham Canoe Club. Burnham had been showing Smith how to operate the car. a mishap with the gas supply caused the blast, lifting both men from the seat and throwing them several feet. Burnham suffered torn skin on knees and hands, while Smith was bruised about the body.
In Bingham Maine Herbert Nottage, accused of killing his young wife, led a large armed man hunt through deep snow as nearly twenty officers pursued him at night. In Lyons Nebraska Georgia Allyn Sampson was acquitted after trial for shooting her husband Harry Sampson.
Lucinda Nottage, about 19, shot four times at the Bingham House where she worked a fortnight after separating from husband Nottage. He had traveled from Lexington to settle custody of their baby. He was in the parlor when her remark about the baby preceded four shots. The incident ended with a telephone call to Mrs. Nottage’s father in North Anson.
Mrs. Sampson trembled at the verdict but quickly regained composure and greeted her father relatives and friends. She held a reception in court thanking her lawyers jurors and press representatives. District Attorney Gilbert stated I am satisfied I have done my full duty by the people and by the prisoner.

The Senate Finance Committee will report probable changes to the Payne tariff bill. Proposed shifts include keeping Wool and Spices at near Dingley levels, reducing the Dingley duty by 67 cents a ton for coal, and cutting iron ore to 20 cents per ton. Steel rails rise to about 5 per ton, structural steel to half a cent per pound, pulp and paper partial restoration, citrus slight increases, lumber unchanged at $1 per thousand, works of art placed on the free list.
In Washington the Payne tariff bill cleared the House as Republicans held a solid majority with one abstention. The roll showed 217 yeas to 161 nays, with Representative Austin of Tennessee the lone Republican opposing over coal free provisions. Four Louisiana Democrats voted for the bill.
