Flood conditions persist across New England as rivers remain high and damage grows. Mills stay idle with little prospect of restart, while continued rain worsens floods and ice movement affects Maine log harvest on northern rivers.
Mayor Hart plans to send an eighty four member list of first and second assistant assessors, prompting expected clashes as the Board of Assessors must approve. The move, seen as bold political expediency, risks angering regular Democrats and Republicans alike with replacements influenced by party loyalties and ward battles.
A Boston bill introduces a three member excise style police board appointed by the Mayor or Governor. Three alarms were sounded from Old South Church Box 41 and fire crews battled the blaze with Devonshire and Arch street streams aided by aerial ladders. The J Montgomery Sears estate owned building housed firms including Seth W Fuller H C Whitcomb Smith Premier Forbes Company and others heavily damaged.
A newly found Henry Wadsworth Longfellow hymn connected to the Appleton Chapel dedication at Harvard, read yesterday by Professor Peabody. The piece titled Christo et Ecclesiae remained hidden in a private collection of Longfellow letters. Mrs. Longfellow asked Peabody not to publish, and he has not released the text.
Clouby area and New England Olmidy show Wednesday and Thursday unsettled with light rain and brisk northerly winds. Eastern New York expects fair Wednesday with Thursday partly cloudy and possible afternoon rain in western and southern parts.

The Canadian Pacific railway is crippled in Maine by the freshet with washouts blocking the line. The Montreal and Boston train due at noon was stalled at Mattawamkeag for hours before finally passing. An ice jam at Oromocto below Fredericton broke, carrying away a wharf and seven barns.
In Waterville Maine tonight the Emerson road bridge and Dunn Edge Tool footbridge gave way. Thirty minutes later the Rice bridge was torn away three miles from town. Authorities fear Cedar bridge may fail before morning with potential great damage.
In Machias Maine the south wing of the log boom at the Machias Lumber Company broke near the covered bridge over the Machias River this afternoon. About 500000 feet of logs floated into the tide water.
