A critical portrayal claims the Kaiser travels with a figure called the German God who stirs soldiers to slaughter. The piece accuses this “God” of blessing destruction, enslaving conquered lands, and upholding might over right. It labels the deity a merciful facade blind to war’s blasphemy.
New England is setting the pace for the nation in the drive to secure 3 billion dollars and more for the government to prosecute the war to a victorious finish. Yesterday the New England Liberty Loan Committee was swamped with reports from cities and towns as the drive continued.
The Union Painters refuse a proposed daily wage of 5.60 and demand 6.00, a 20 percent increase. Masters offer an advance from 25 to 28 for a five day week of eight hours, but the union rejects it. A meeting authorized the master secretary to propose arbitration to District Council No. 41 and Local Painters Union No. 11, awaiting reply.
Maine communities led the McCall Shield of Honor competition with Moose River in front and Newry at the bottom. Clerk M. E. Holden of Moose River, reporting the first tally of local men in United States armed services, pushed Moose River ahead of Dover, which had led earlier.

American forces rapidly deploy as troops are rushed to France amid the mounting war effort. Logistics mobilize naval and air support to reinforce Allied lines and bolster strategic positions overseas.
Washington April 8 Acting Secretary Crowell said the transportation of American troops to France is proceeding at an accelerated rate after the Battle of Picardy began but he refused to provide details. The plan includes initial training with the British and then transfer to American command.
After talks with allied officials, a British statement announced American forces will be brigaded with British units to speed U.S. entry into the war. About 30 days of joint training will fit new American battalions for front duty, with faster learning due to shared language and veteran instruction. Americans will join Pershing’s army after training and fight alongside British on the front.
Haig's dispatch from France notes only artillery activity at various points along the front and near Bucquoy, with no other items of special interest to report tonight.
Berlin says German forces pressed along the Oise and forced the French back from the lower outskirts of Coucy wood. Official headquarters report states the attack on the southern bank of the Oise drove the enemy from strong positions on the heights east of Coucy le Chateau.
