Bridge for Smith Fund at Newton Club

The Smith College Alumnae Association of Newton hosted a bridge event at the Newton Club yesterday presenting 50 tables. Mary Glover led the committee with help from Mrs. Frank P. Scofield and Katharine Ames among others, raising over $200 for the Smith million dollar fund.

Ex football star to be wed today

Edward Wingersky son of Mr and Mrs Lazarus Wingersky of 85 Devon street and a former football star at Mechanics Arts High School will wed Miss Mabel Silverman daughter of Mr and Mrs Mendel Silverman of 57 Humboldt avenue tomorrow evening at the Brookline residence of Henry Penn the florist.

Legal Affairs Committee Moves to Repeal Bar and Bottle Law

The committee on legal affairs reported a bill last night indirectly repealing the bar and bottle law. Five dissenters opposed the report though the act constrains selling bottled goods in a saloon and selling liquor by the glass in a bottle place.

Local option liquor bills seek delayed openings and mixed licenses

A repeal bill allows fourth and fifth class licenses to operate alongside first class licenses with local option referendums in each municipality. Dissenting Senators Hilton Montague and Representatives Tufts Haines Wilson Cassasa opposed the report that would bar saloons before 8 am. Other measures include liquor sales restrictions on special occasions in Boston and refund-when-death provisions.

Railroads Seek Power to Electrify Any Time Under Bill

Railroad bill faces committee where ex Mayor Nathan Matthews demands the board be empowered to order electrification on any railroad at any time. He notes the proposal would issue 63 million in debenture bonds beyond current limits and allow use outside the state without rail commission approval. Attorney Coolidge represents the railroads and says they are ready to electrify whenever the board orders it.

Without debate the woman suffrage bills were killed in the Senate due to an agreement to let the question stand. The Drury straw vote bill was killed among the rest.

Boston & Eastern bond extension approved in House vote

The House approved extending to January 1 next the deadline for Boston and Eastern to file a $400000 construction bond by a voice vote. An amendment to forbid selling its charter failed 69 to 147 as Washburn and Lomasney traded sharp remarks during the debate.

Harvard Man Heads New Rural Organization Service

Washington April 7. Secretary Houston created the rural organization service in the Department of Agriculture and named Dr. T N Carver of Harvard as its director. The unit extends the division of markets to study marketing and distribution of farm products, per last year’s congressional authorization.

French Department Head at Wellesley Dies of Pneumonia

Mme. Henriette Louise Therese Colin, head of the French department at Wellesley College, died yesterday morning of pneumonia after an illness of a few days. She joined Wellesley in 1904 as associate professor and was named head in 1907 as professor of French language and literature.

In contrast to earlier chaos March 3 protestors moved along cleared streets under heavy police guard. Alice Paul led the procession into the Capitol where Representative Bryan welcomed them and pledged Senate and House support for equal suffrage. Senators Brady La Follette Jones Shafroth Poindexter Townsend Sutherland and Thomas greeted the marchers and voiced support. Each woman carried a petition urging congressional action.

Delaware Peach Crop Damaged by Cold Weather

Dover reports the Delaware peach crop likely suffered serious damage from overnight frost. An advanced spring growth means the entire peach crop and much of other tree fruits are injured, according to Professor Webb of the State Bureau of Agriculture.
