Electrification as a Merger Promise for New England Railroads
Vice-President Byrnes of the New Haven railroad told the Boston Produce Exchange that electric motive power could dominate suburban rail travel within 20 miles of Boston within five to six years if the New Haven gains control of the Boston and Maine. He warned that without merger New England could lose independence to interests west of the Hudson and suffer as the New Haven would become a mere switching yard for northern lines.
