Admiral Belknap Dies of Apoplexy in Key West
Rear Admiral George E. Belknap U. S. N. retired died of apoplexy. He had been slated for duty on plans to establish a naval base and will be buried in Brookline Massachusetts. Born January 22 182 years earlier he began as midshipman aboard the brig Porpoise and served in the Civil War including Charleston engagements at Fort Wagner Sumter and Moultrie. He commanded the gunboat Seneca and ironclad Canonicus and later explored Cuan waters and Formosa. He helped with canal surveys near Darien and depth soundings near Japan. He invented three cylinder cups for ocean floor samples and earned thanks from Hawaiian officials after restoring order at Honolulu. He held several commands including Pensacola Mare Island and Norfolk yards and rose to rear admiral in 1889 with service in the Asiatic Station.
