The Rev F W Ryder was installed last evening as pastor of Central Square Baptist Church East Boston. The service drew a large congregation with sermons and welcomes from multiple clergymen including Rev Dr J Warren Randolph of Newport RI and Rev L B Bates of Meridian Street Bethel. Ryder succeeds Rev J K Richardson, now preaching in Brockton, and begins his pastorate on April 1, residing on the Dudley estate on Trenton street.
Washington dispatch says for twenty four hours from 7 am Friday April 8 fair weather with slightly warmer temperatures for New England and Eastern New York. Variable winds accompany the conditions.
Special Officer Watts and Patrolman Vaughan arrested Arthur C. Goodwin yesterday afternoon for larceny of 250 dollars from Frank H. Baker in his Central street office. Employed by Baker and with access keys, Goodwin allegedly carried out the scheme for a year. Marked money was left in the tower. he was seen entering and exiting the office, with the marked funds in his possession.

Finch Edge & Co report they expected no tidings and the Salerno, overdue two weeks, has not been heard since March 27. The Salerno was seen proceeding east under sail with a broken propeller and declined Elbe’s offer of assistance.
London April 7 The Celtic League issued a manifesto opposing the coercion bill and called a mass meeting in London to denounce it. An earlier Dundee meeting ended in disorder as Irish attendees rejected thanks to speakers and cheered home rule. Vienna’s Neue Freie Presse cautioned the bill might lower crime but won’t convert enmity into loyalty. Berlin’s Vossische Zeitung warned the law will ruin remaining friendship between lawmakers and the oppressed.
London April 7 The Journal de Geneve reports an iron regime in Reichs land where many citizens are arrested without cause and imprisoned for simple offenses such as dress colors or disaffection. The report, supported by credible witnesses, notes arrests and fortress confinement by rulers. Berny April 7 The Madrid Epoca notes a Spanish minister to China toasted France and the Revanche, offending Spain.

Salem reports Naumkeag Company has agreed to buy the Salem and Danvers street railway. Odell, Naumkeag president and major stockholder, had been buying Danvers stock and offered 140 for the remainder. directors held out for 165 plus debt assumption. Stockholders to ratify. deal ends competition and allows car coordination between branches.
In New York on April 7 Judge Barrett resumed the Duff Hutchinson case. John R. Duff faced sharp cross examination about testimony given to the stock exchange that led to Hutchinson's expulsion. An order to produce the firm's books was granted. Geo H. Bower, cashier, testified in the afternoon but provided little new light. The case adjourned until Monday.
Crabaco April 7 officials said New York Central notified that Burlington tickets were withdrawn from sale. Western roads accuse Eastern lines of boycotting over commissions, claiming negligible impact on passenger revenue as they still dominate east to west travel.
Secretary Whitney plans rapid completion of the Atlanta Boston and Chicago cruisers to settle contractor accounts. He will discontinue extra work added after trials and focus on fulfilling the original contracts with John Roach, aside from minor sea fitting changes.

A gun fired during a Brown A M E Church service in Alleghany Pensylvania narrowly missed Rev L Lowry as a window shattered and a bullet lodged in the wall. Worshippers fled in panic while the pastor urged calm and continued the sermon afterward despite the danger.
In Asbury Park a village schoolmaster, A. B. Corliss, revealed as a poker and games professor led children to play cards after school from 2 to 4 pm. He claimed card play kept order while drawing cards and telling stories. Trustees voted to discharge him, but Corliss, a crutch user, refuses to leave.
The barkentine Susan bound from St. John's to the Barbadoes struck an iceberg off Cape Croyle and sank in half an hour. The captain and crew of seventeen abandoned ship in a failing boat that capsized. Five men died: Captain Michael Ryan, Mate John Calls, Frank Dillon of St. John's, John Allen of unknown origin, and Steward Thomas Mallard. Survivors were rescued by the barkentine Muriel after arduous efforts.
Lansina, Mich., April 7. Asa Foresten, a respected Japanese trader here, tells a new chapter about Kissane. He recounts Kissane's command role in Shanghai during the 1857 rebellion and the capture of Japanese prisoners. Foresten details Kissane’s rise, his favor with the Emperor, and a body servant named Usa who traveled with Kissane to Europe.
In Tuscarora Nevada yesterday a box of giant powder thawed near the boiler set off a blast that wrecked the hoisting works and boiler. Five men were seriously injured including foreman A D Russell who is believed fatally hurt. Pumping gear and mines flooded. North Belle Isle and nearby mines filling with water. Three months will pass before new works can be built and work resumes.
Sprincheap April 7 The Albany to Boston express was two and a half hours late after a journal broke in the New York mail car on the upgrade east of Rochdale. One mail car truck derailed, no injuries. Between Westboro and Grafton a 46 year old colored man died in his seat. he held a Lenox ticket. A companion said the man had just been pardoned from State prison for burglary in 1876.
Curvetann April 7 report: the reorganized church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints meets at the old Mormon Temple in Kirkland Ohio built fifty years ago by Joseph Smith and followers. About seventy delegates attend as Joseph Smith of Iowa, son of the original Joseph Smith, presides and opens with a speech. The church reports 19,236 members, a net gain of 1306 this year, with Iowa leading at 4227 and Virginia smallest. Utah counts 406 members.
In Springfield on April 7 Balbo the Cuban defeated Charles H Manning of New York 16 to 12 in a high stakes pyramid pool match. The $600 stake was hotly contested with Balbo delivering a strong performance while Manning faced tough luck. The match is billed as the country’s most important two handed contest and Balbo will soon challenge Champion Frey.
Providence April 7 The tally shows Davis winning by 978 over a total vote of 834,915, the largest in state history. Democrats gain 31 House seats and tie Senate at 18-18 with 5 pending. Republicans face possible loss of control on joint ballot. Prohibition amendment appears defeated in latest returns, with sponsors awaiting final official count.
A large Montreal meeting at Queen's Hall denounced the proposed coercion bill for Ireland. Ex Mayor Beaugrand J J Curran M P and others spoke. Resolutions called the measure subversive of British liberty and urged MPs in Canada Quebec and Montreal to oppose it in sympathy with Ireland and home rule.
The shoemakers union Knights of St Crispin may be revived at an early New York convention. Representatives from District Assemblies 30 and 17 of Massachusetts 91 of New York 70 of Philadelphia and 68 of Rochester will attend. They represent the dissatisfied element within the Knights of Labor.
New York April 7 In a bid to counter the belief Catholic clergy largely oppose Archbishop Corrigan a petition is circulating among priests to gather signatures for Rome on behalf of the archbishop. McGlynn supporters are elated while others see weakness in the archbishop's stance.
Hallifax Nova Scotia April 7 The Gloucester fishing schooner Everett Steele which put in yesterday to replace her hories and anchors lost on the Western Banks is to be allowed to buy gear here a favorable reply from Ottawa has been received The schooner having lost her gear during a storm the privilege of replacing it is extended in the same manner as the privilege of repairing is accorded to any American fishing vessel.
Trenton New Jersey April 7 The Legislature adjourned amid confusion and ill will. A resolution of thanks to the Speaker failed. The thirteen week session passed with little important legislation.
Norfolk Virginia April 7 the wholesale boot and shoe house of S N Brickhouse Co assigned today liabilities 90000 assets above that amount The notice indicates financial trouble for the company and a formal assignment of its obligations.
The Josephus reports passing an abandoned 1000 ton ship with all masts standing and apparently sound condition at sea. Coordinates given are 39 37 N, 44 30 W. Also noted are arrivals of steamers State of the Sea, Errant, Glasgow, Italia, Tricate, Britannia from Marseille.
