His Swiss citizenship claim was rejected, and he was arrested on a presidential warrant while agents reviewed years of movements. He resigned as orchestra leader after his detention.
French forces advanced east of Verdun amid 1915 war coverage. Ex-Governor Curtis Guild died of pneumonia that year. One year since the United States and Germany declared war, with German vessels in U.S. ports seized by the United States.
