Augusta Maine April 15 County Attorney Asa A Richardson was convicted by the State Legislature on charges of corruption and incompetency. The Senate voted 16 to 8 and the House 67 to 55.
The prosecution claims Richardson aimed to block trial of William J. White of Old Orchard on a liquor nuisance indictment. An unsigned indictment followed after Associate Justice Haley declined to file the case. Deputy sheriffs Stone and Doyle testified. The defense denies all charges and the case tied to Emery trial testimony about protection money from a Biddeford man, allegedly $56 weekly.
Augusta Maine April 5 The resignation of Sheriff Charles O Emery of York county follows his acquittal on bribery charges by the Legislature today.
Salem reports 27 smallpox cases with six more found today. A team of physicians vaccinated 1000 pupils at the French parochial school and 1500 mill hands at the Naumkeag mills as part of the outbreak response.
Police guard houses of smallpox victims while theatres moving pictures and boys clubs in Point district close until Monday. Patients relocated to Smallpox Hospital at Salem Neck. Local outbreak traced to French residents posing as chicken pox for a month.
Mrs Emma Rumbull pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of her 14 year old stepdaughter Helen Rumbull found July 3 with a broken neck. She was sentenced to two years in prison while her brother Arthur Lewis serves ten years for the crime. The statement cites extreme heat in the Sacramento Valley attic where the girl was allegedly bound to joists.

Mrs Helen Alden of 64 Emerald Street South End was seriously injured while saving her daughter from a runaway vehicle. The rescue attempt endangered both mother and child in a tragic incident reported in the city.
Mrs Helen Alden of the South End is near death at City Hospital from injuries suffered yesterday afternoon when she shielded her daughter as a runaway horse struck her on Washington street opposite the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
A runaway horse and wagon owned by Brigham Company collided with pedestrians near Malden and Washington streets in Cambridge. A mother protected her 13 year old daughter Alice, saving her from death while suffering minor injuries. the mother Mrs. Alden endured a fractured skull and remains hospitalized, with her daughter and the driver Charles Millbury reported in varying condition. The horse frightened by an elevated train veered through streets as bystanders fled. The driver escaped serious injury.
Judge Thomas P. Riley, Democratic State committee chairman, withdrew as a candidate for delegate to the national convention and announced he will stump for Champ Clark in this state. He filed the withdrawal with the Secretary of State and expects criticism for leading the state party.
Judge Riley, former chairman, says his support for Speaker Clark is in private capacity. He withdrew as a delegate candidate to back Clark while still campaigning against George Fred Williams for delegate-at-large. He calls Williams a destructive force and vows to stump for Clark amid party realignments.
A Mississippi river flood burst through a government levee five miles west of Hickman Kentucky, flooding 150 square miles of farmland and threatening remote farmers. The gap was 60 feet wide and the breach continues to widen as efforts to hold the flood continue.

John Sandford, 17, of Jason Terrace, Arlington, was held up by two masked men at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Lake Street last night. One thief pointed a revolver and took all belongings including letters and keys.
Sandford lost about five dollars and had his ring scarf pin letters and keys stolen. He filed the report with Lieutenant Hooley at headquarters and a search of the foreign settlement near Lake street followed, but Sandford could not identify any suspect as his highwayman.

US soldiers report dynamite caused little structural damage but trains cannot operate. The bridge is guarded by US Twenty-second Infantry and Mexican troops.
