Merriam Loses Mayor Race as Ward Variances Appear
Scrutiny of returns by wards shows Professor Merriam trailed Fred Busse by about 7 percent from four years ago while Harrison surpassed E. F. Dunne by over 17 percent. Voter total neared 341,000, roughly 25,000 above the prior mayoral tally, but Merriam still lost due to weak turnout in key silk-stocking wards and drizzly rain. Harrison claimed victory as early returns from 2nd ward confirmed it, and Socialist gains contrasted with Prohibition declines, with 5,875 voting four years ago shrinking this time.
