Twenty men and seven boys, linked to a band of Italian criminals, were found hidden in a water tank aboard the White Star steamer Cretic arriving from Genoa and Naples with 2007 passengers. Police and federal authorities had been alerted from Naples for a possible threat of murderers aboard.
More than 9000 mill operatives in New England were told of wage increases yesterday. Notices posted at Clinton Lan caster gingham mills, Warren Thorndike mills, Three Rivers Palmer mill, Thorndike mills at Thorndike, and Bondsville Boston Duck mill. J G Coats Pawtucket raised mule spinners and back boys wages. Nashua & Jackson mills Nashua NH announce immediate second increase. York Mills Saco Maine to full time 70 striking weavers remain. American Thread Willimantic CT To grant 10 percent raise to over 2000 workers from April 15. Most disputes settled though some strikes continue. Hoag Walden Lynn shoe workers began a 250-strong strike.
The executive committee of the board announced a pension system for the 12,000 employees. The start date was not set but July 1 was hoped as the effective date.
The firm has been studying welfare ideas for months and will implement its own injury plan. Details are private as some phases are undecided, but there is no contributory feature. The pension is company funded, based on years of service, with permissive and compulsory retirement at certain ages for both genders, noting many employees are women.
Daring flyer who crossed the continent in an aeroplane is killed in a flight accident at Long Beach California. The notable aviator was also known as a football player and motorcyclist, per local reports.
Cal braith P. Rodgers, famed for crossing America by air, died in Long Beach when his biplane plunged from about 200 feet into the surf near a beachfront amusement area. An auto carrying two men and three young women crashed through the gates of the draw on the Charles town bridge at midnight, stopping on the brink of a 40 foot drop to the water. The front of the car, believed to belong to W H Ellis of 487 Meridian Street East Boston, was badly damaged. the gate was torn away but all passengers escaped injury.
The United National Association of Postoffice Clerks Branch 5 elected officers yesterday. John A. Mc Mahon was named president with Frederick J. O Flaherty as vice president, William J. Magee recording secretary, Joseph J. Bevins financial secretary, and Thomas F. Brooks treasurer.
An unconscious man believed to be John Wood of Lawrence was found in a gutter on Main Street Wakefield last night with a throat wound from ear to ear. Police cordon off the area and investigate the stabbing. A passerby reported the incident to authorities.
Police search in Wakefield and Melrose for a weapon found only a jack knife and two pencils. A lead pencil note read Well Emily good-by I hope you will forgive me Kisses for you and the baby John. The man, connected to a sale sheet advertisement for a Lawrence saloon, was hospitalized in Melrose in serious condition. No missing person by that name is known to police.
John O'Donnell aged 65 was carried from a lodging house at 470 Massachusetts avenue by William Bowers of Protective Company 2. The blaze forced 16 residents to flee. Damage estimated at 1000 dollars. The fire started in a rear second floor room and was spotted by Mr and Mrs William Carroll returning from the theatre.

A flyer on a crowded pier opened full speed then pitched into a frightful descent as he tried to level the craft. Hundreds saw him release the levers and race to pull the nose up, but the craft nosed inshore and crashed near the surf. Lifeguards Ernest Scott and James Goodwin were among the first responders.
