Samuel Hoar in Critical Condition in Concord

April 3 reports Samuel Hoar general counsel of the Boston and Albany railroad ill at home in Concord with cerebral hemorrhage and paralysis. Hoar, born 1845 in Concord, Harvard graduate, Harvard Law School, served as pardon clerk in U S Attorney General's office, and long practiced in Boston. He is son of judge E R Hoar and nephew of Senator George F Hoar, married to a daughter of the late Senator Wadleigh.

A four month old boy with only woolen socks and a horse blanket was found in a doorway on the corner of Tufts and Lincoln streets. He was taken to Lagrange Street police station and then sent to the Chardon Street home.

Japanese occupy Sengcheng in northwest Corea

The advance guard of the Japanese army seized Sengcheng, 18 miles west of Chungju, on the Pekin road, without opposition after driving Russians from Chungju. Russians withdrew in two columns. the Japanese move south of the Yalu River now seems unopposed. Chungju’s fort and surroundings are noted as strong and hard to take.

Fire destroys Rideau Hall wing in Ottawa rescue

In Ottawa on April 3 the new wing of Rideau Hall burned. Lady Minto, with a fractured leg, was in peril but saved as flames trapped aides on the roof. The governor general’s residence, purchased 36 years ago for about 200000 dollars, sustained about 50000 dollars in damage. Firefighters arrived with ladders rescuing those on the roof.

Slugger Attacks Medford Beauty in Broad Day Assault

In Medford a 21 year old woman Miss Nana Frankson reports a bicycle riding youth followed her in Medford square and assaulted her as she walked toward Winchester. The attacker fled when a resident called out and police, though stationing officers, could not catch him. Miss Frankson suffered facial injuries but is not expected to be permanently disfigured. The incident echoes a prior killing in May of Nellie Sturgvant nearby. Police doubt the attacker resides in Medford.
