Maid Saves Mistress From Fire at Newton Home
Mrs. Patrick A. Murray, wife of a Newton carriage maker, was saved from a deadly blaze at 184 Washington Street by her maid Miss Mary Purcell. The fire started when naphtha exploded while Mrs. Murray cleaned clothes on a veranda. Purcell extinguished burning garments and carried her mistress to safety, both sustaining burns. Theodore C. Walker, neighbor and head of Walker Shoe Company, alerted the fire and aided rescue as firefighters battled the blaze for an hour, gutting the two upper floors largely due to water damage.
