Abandonment of Batteries Near Savannah Reported

Flag Officer Dupont reports that rebel batteries on Skidda way and Green Island were abandoned as the Seminole, commanded by Gillis, entered Port Royal. He says this gives Union forces control of Warsaw and Osseban sounds and the mouths of Vernon and Wilmington rivers, key approaches to Savannah. Memoranda from a contraband and Commander Gillis’ report are enclosed for the Navy.

Secession Editor Abandons Cause in Baltimore

A fervent Secessionist who left Baltimore for Richmond to edit an article publication has returned to Baltimore seeking permission to stay as confidence in the rebel cause wanes. Reports from Washington note emancipation resolutions and military passes, plus a broad Western Department inquiry into fraud and abuses. John Janney of Virginia Secession has sworn allegiance to the Federal government.
