In the House of Commons on April 1 the Unionists abandoned war talk and spoke conciliatorily during the home rule bill debate. The calm tone contrasted with two days prior, making passage by consent seem likely.
The discussion centered on a federal settlement with Unionist Sir Mark Sykes urging a settlement while John Dillon delivered a pacific speech. Asquith named General Sir Charles Douglas to succeed Sir John French as chief of staff, with Paget summoned to London for briefing on officers in Ireland and duty before self. Reginald McKenna reported that officers could withdraw temporarily in Ulster if operations were needed, and resignations for those unable to claim exemption were to be dismissed.
In Haverhill on April 1 Miss Mary Murphy a 28 year old housekeeper at Arthur Taylor 126 Main Street almost perished as the city fire department scrambled after an April fool incident. Taylor smelling smoke rushed to the burning apartment house and found Murphy asleep on the third floor he carried her through smoke and flames to safety with others aiding the rescue.
George Edward Waddell known as Rube Waddell died in a San Antonio sanitarium of tuberculosis after a long illness. The former baseball star had come to Texas four months earlier seeking recovery and a return to the game, but weakened by pulmonary trouble he deteriorated and was moved to the sanitarium near Boerne.
John Waddell father of Rube and his mother came from Boerne two hours after the son's death. A sister living locally is the only other surviving relative. Interment is scheduled here tomorrow.

Worcester April 1 attorneys for Mrs Selma Apslund in her suit against the White Star line for 177000 for the loss of her husband and three sons in the Titanic disaster received word that the steamship companys attorneys are ready to settle the suit for 93000
Boston society man Nathaniel M. Safford allegedly walked the street penniless while conservators Henry V. Cuningham and Joseph W. Bartlett faced objections to their accounts before Judge Flint in Dedham. The disputed expenditures totaled 37 000 dollars, claimed to exceed estate income.
Mr and Mrs Safford, society figures, describe two years of illness and financial strain. Judge Flint appointed conservators Cunningham and Bartlett to manage property. The couple say funds were scarce, with conservators reluctant to provide funds as needed. Records show many small cash payments to Mr Safford, typically 15 to 35 dollars.
General Villa denies reports that Torreon has fallen. He states he has taken part of the city but the struggle is not complete and he expects a triumph, advising Colonel Fidel Avila of the Juarez garrison.
Reports differing on Torreon surrender spread through the city. Authorities denied an armistice but night despatches said Huerta was hastening troops to aid General Velasco and that several thousand trained men were nearing Torreon.
3000 federal reinforcements marching to Torreon to relieve General Velasco were intercepted 28 miles southeast of Torreon along the Mexican Central railway. General Maclovio Herrera’s rebel brigade clashed with the relief column from noon, with heavy losses reported on both sides.
Boston suffragists packed Tremont Temple as Dr. Anna Howard Shaw led national speakers in addressing the 2000 strong crowd. Leaders urged Massachusetts to press for a 1915 victory at the polls, highlighting the significance for the nationwide suffrage movement.
At a meeting close, pledges and cash contributions totaling 900 were raised for the campaign across seven Western States Montana Nevada North Dakota South Dakota Missouri Nebraska and Ohio. Half the fund stays in Massachusetts as the state becomes eligible to receive campaign money following a new suffrage bill.
A jury selected outside Boston will decide today the guilt or innocence of Attorney David Mancovitz former Representative from Ward 8. He has been on trial for eight days in the United States District Court charged with receiving 17116 dollars from Jacob Watchmaker his cousin and client with intent to defeat the bankruptcy act in the latter s case.

Mrs. Mary A. Chick 42 of 31 Green Street Worcester was shot in her city apartment at about 8 30 last night by an unknown young man about 22. She died before removal to City Hospital. Chick was wife of Louis V. Chick of Chick Print Company Boston.
