Colonel George Burton Dyer previously of Bancroft and Dyer dissolves that partnership and announces his association with Paine's Furniture Co. He invites friends and patrons to visit and be served from the firm’s finest stock in the country.
Bargain boots and shoes advertise three dollar sale items and calf hand sewn congress models priced from 3.75 to 5.00. English grain hunting shoe also listed. Hat and cap department promises lower spring prices. Domestic market notices and city items follow on pages 1 through 8.
Observers in Boston record at 8 AM and 8 PM the barometer around 29.89 to 29.93 inches and the thermometer from 33.1 to 37.0 F. Relative humidity near 90 percent with northeast wind at 16 to 17 mph. Precipitation totals 0.66 inches and mean daily conditions show 35.5 F and 90.5 percent humidity.

Adams to Mare Island repair, Alert built 1875, Richmond 1858 with 2700 ton burden. Samoa plan may hinge on US German conference outcomes. Sailors from wrecked vessels to San Francisco. Sperber and Alexandrine depart for Samoa to replace German ships.

In New Haven on April 1 a porter stopped Montire Calbao in the proprietor's room of the Arlington Hotel. The thief fled after the proprietor believed it was an April fool joke. Soon after, Landlord Bickford reported a missing $1100 note and a bank book.
In Providence Rhode Island April 1 ex Lieutenant Governor Colonel Samuel R Honey of Newport resigns from national and state Democratic committees. No public reason given but party members cite lack of influence on Senate vote guidance and past weak electoral showing in 1887.
Cincinnati voters backed Mosby for mayor by about 500 votes as reformist Daniel Stone led the drive to enforce Sunday beer sales rules. Horstman won the Superior Court judge post, Ziegler the city treasurer, and Stevens, Ermston, Corcoran and locker secured other city offices in a Democratic sweep. Stone received about 7400 votes.
Chicago voters face a three way ballot with Democrat DeWitt C. Cregier Republican Mayor John A. Roche and Socialist candidate. The battle centers on elevated roads and street railways with Yerkes influence backing Cregier and Cantwell the Irish Democrat running for assessor amid British American leadership.
Detroit voters participated in statewide contests for a Supreme Court justice and two State University regents. Two constitutional amendments passed, boosting the governor’s salary and allowing corporations to continue after thirty years without reorganization. Republicans led by over 15,000 in Detroit, with women voting for school inspectors and electing a Democrat-endorsed woman candidate.
In St Louis about 1200 of 2000 carpenters walked out demanding an eight hour day and 40 cents per hour. Bosses largely concede eight hours but many refuse higher wages. Strikers formed committees at Central Turner Hall and seek recognition by the Brotherhood. Similar actions occur in Burrao Latem Wosvurn and Storpensere unions with nine hour demands and stalled contracts.
A large Dex ter Hall gathering in Boston, under Carpenters' Union No. 33, heard Frank K. Foster discuss wages and hours, promoting eight hour adoption. Hugh McKay and J G Clinkard spoke as resolutions of sympathy and support for striking carpenters were adopted, with a follow up mass meeting planned at Evans Hall to discuss forming a West End carpenters' union.
In San Francisco on April 1 it was stated that the American refinery was formally sold to the Eastern Sugar Trust today. The refinery had been transferred to the trust a year earlier in exchange for trust certificates. Suit followed to annul the charter for joining the trust as some stockholders protested the transfer.
A letter from Henry M. Stanley dated Sept 4 1888 reaches Edinburgh friend. Stanley reports good health and spirits after meeting Emin Pasha on Albert Nyanza shores. they were together 26 days. Emin Pasha is said to be in good health. Sir Francis de Winton notes the letter will occupy five newspaper columns and not be published until tomorrow. he adds the government is unaware of its contents.
The Journal de Paris reports a conference among M. Rou vier, the finance minister, liquidators, and a bankers syndicate resulting in an immediate reconstruction of the Comptoir d'Escompte. American copper agents met the liquidators while Temps notes bills due today were met with no trouble and defaults near average.
Emperor William and Count von Waldersee visit Prince Bismarck to congratulate him on his seventy fourth birthday. The Emperor presents a huge hound to replace the late Reichshund as a birthday gift for the chancellor.
Washington reports a letter of instructions issued by the General Land Office with Secretary Noble's approval. It guides registers and receivers on homestead rules for Oklahoma, including exceptions for prior homesteads, Army veterans entries, and town site limits, with emphasis on offering lands to actual settlers and timing open for entry.
Fire destroyed Glencoe Iron Works of Arms Bell & Co and Brown Bonnell & Co in Youngstown Ohio causing combined losses of about 99 000 with extensive insured coverage. Insurance brands include Rhode Island Underwriters Orient of Hartford Springfield of Massachusetts Alma Hartford and others. A separate line notes a chimney combustion at 16 Holyoke street and a needless alarm from Box 81 at 6 35 last evening.
