Magic Electricity Lighting Up NYC Churches
In New York there are nearly two hundred electric lamps for churches and missions, with the Calvary Episcopal Church cross boasting 360 candle power atop its spire. Across the East River the "Brooklyn Tabernacle" lamps spread out, while Rev. M. Kimber sparked the trend in 1877 by urging a gas lit cross at St. Augustine Church. The New York Herald notes the cross’s light altered Bowery and Lower East Side life, though experts debate its exact impact. Early days required manual lamp lighting, now switches ignite vast displays, marking a technological leap. Mrs. Ovia Marsh and Miss Junio Wage host guests. Miss Gladys Hitt visits Mrs. Hartman for the weekend.
