In a Washington briefing Sen. John Sparkman says Lyndon B. Johnson's Texas win crushes any third-party threat in the Deep South. The victory boosts Johnson's status for the 1956 nomination, while other southern senators note the triumph harms bolter prospects and strengthens party unity.
Boyd Scott a 44 year old former Burleson postmaster and city secretary tax collector and manager was charged with embezzling a total of 4380 dollars from Burleson city funds. He was released on bond Tuesday after the formal accusation.
Police Chief O R McKissack announced a crackdown on loud mufflers cut-outs and by passes citing city ordinance and Texas law. The crackdown aims to curb unnecessary noise and slow speeders with tougher fines to be sought from Municipal Judge Tom Denton.
Senate leader Lyndon B. Johnson said he would not pursue the Democratic presidential nomination but would accept it if the will of the Texas delegation and the majority demanded. He told reporters he would not seek delegates in other states, hoping the Texas delegation would be heard at the national convention.

In Texas the Democratic primary for governor drew a tight field after the Yarborough deaths. Ralph Yarborough paid his filing, with J Holmes Yarborough soon following. Other contenders include Sen. Prue Daniel former Gov. Lee O Daniel and Reuben Senterfitt. New filings added Tom Moore Curtis M Hill and Ross Carlton for attorney general. Will Witton and other late filers entered several races including Supreme Court places 1 and 3 and Agriculture Commissioner.
President Lyndon Johnson named to head Blanco county delegation for the state Democratic Convention in Dallas on May 22. Gregg county also named Shivers to head a delegation and endorsed his states rights program.
Only 23 candidates filed for 16 offices in the first Democratic primary. Deadline midnight produced a sparse ballot with nine countywide names, while many entries run for precinct posts. Rayburn faces A G McRae in a Denison race. other races include sheriff, county attorney, and tax assessor collector.
In Austin the Texas Republican state executive committee, 40 of 62 members, drafted a resolution directing the secretary of state that Republicans will nominate candidates for the general elections at their state convention rather than by primaries. The action follows a legal quirk requiring parties not using primaries to certify by the second Tuesday in May whether they will nominate by primary or at the state convention.

A three week cool front moved north, triggering small tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in West Texas. One tornado struck Andrews Monday night, shattering a window and injuring a woman.
