Nine Suspects Arrested in Oats Theft Ring in Saturday Raid

Sheriff and deputies seized nine black suspects tied to a scheme stealing oats and 266 oat sacks from Rogers Woodward and Roberts Company. Ninety five bushels taken. three men did the theft while others received or concealed goods. Some hauled oats for shipment and hid sacks to divide later. Additional arrests expected.

Reports from sunk ship crews say German submarines patrolled off the New Jersey coast sinking several American vessels during the night. The maritime association reportedly lists fifteen ships sunk with a full statement to follow from naval authorities.

Navy reports sunk American schooners by German submarines

Washington reports three American schooners sunk off the coast by German submarines with a full Department statement promised. By 2 o'clock seven vessels are listed as victims, with a possible rise to fifteen after fuller reports. The steamer Carolina with fifty two passengers is shelled en route from New York to San Juan.

Two Tank Steamers Sunk Off Sandy Hook by Submarines

An Atlantic port report says two tank steamers were sunk about 150 miles off Sandy Hook between seven and eight last night. A Canadian Pacific liner arriving with 150 passengers said SOS calls came from the torpedoed ships and from one vessel declaring it was sinking. The Boston port is closed due to submarines and rumors persist of American ships sunk off the Massachusetts coast, with reports naming the Carolina and a submarine captured or sunk.
