Two hundred United Stock Handlers Union workers walked out at the Fort Worth stockyards Texas largest livestock exchange. The one hour stoppage failed to win a closed shop or seniority plan. Eighty acres of pens for cattle hogs and sheep were left untended as the strike continued. Union officials planned more talks to avoid harm to the animals.
Fannin county's Young Democratic League will hold a meeting Thursday evening at 8 in the District Court room. Choice Moore, president, requests all members to be present.
The Schuylkill Transportation Company in Mahanoy City receives an anonymous letter with three $1 bills. The note says it is “conscience money” for a ride taken years ago without paying fare, and asks the money be put where it belongs.
In Elyria Ohio Sheriff Carl R Finegan campaigns to remove dilapidated vehicles from streets. He stops drivers and warns of arrest for reckless operation if they do not junk their cars immediately.
New York reports detail a comical chase as John Davis pursued by police in Greenwich Village after a shoe store incident. Pred Gerking, 73, rescues a trapped cat but is struck by a car. George Junroe saves a falling child from a second-floor balcony. In Toledo, U P notes 100 children receive special lunches to boost weight before school opens.
Fritz Kuhn, head of the German American Bund, tells the Dies committee he ordered destruction of Bund membership lists a year earlier amid rumors of an investigation. He estimates 20 000 members with sympathizers three to five times larger and names units in Texas San Antonio Taylor and Austin. He faced questions from Rep Joe Starnes about Bund locations.
Milas Marve St Aubin of Cleveland a manicurist and Lakewood Police Pistol Association captain says shooting steadies her hand and helps with her work. She began shooting in Florida last year and finds it great fun and improving her manicure accuracy.
Texas wildlife officials forecast strong hunting season prospects across the state. Mourning doves have repopulated in large numbers, turkeys lag in parts but others show good stocks, and deer are in excellent condition with prime areas in the Hill Country Mecca and Southwest Texas offering strong stocks.
An overton Texas hospital reports a 26 ounce premature baby, born Saturday to Mrs. B D Swan, survived three days and is fed hourly with a medicine dropper. The boy, under care of Dr H Heiligman and two nurses in an improvised incubator, may grow into a normal child according to doctors.
Arty Gen Mann announced two department men were sent to Washington to probe alleged antitrust violations in Texas. Jerry Sadler of the Railroad Commission released a 15 year contract dated July 1 1934 for oil purchases involving the Standard Oil of New Jersey and Humble Oil. Sadler claimed the document proves Humble is a Standard Oil subsidiary.
Washington reports a six month gain in retail trade with total value at 17.9 billion dollars, up 6 percent from the previous year. Bonhem business leaders back the Texas Pacific Railway permit plan to operate five trucks on highway 5 between Sherman and Texarkana despite railroad opposition.
Camden records show Southern New Jersey couples withdrew from opposing New Jersey's proposed pre marital blood test law, per the marriage license bureau. In July 83 couples applied for licenses here, far above the 20 July 1998 filings, reflecting a notable rise in activity.
Bonham State Park will close its swimming season on August 28 after two more weeks of open facilities. M T Taylor president of the Palo Dura Park Corporation urged Bonham and Fannin County residents to use the park before the season ends. Rep. John J. Cochran says there is not the remotest possibility of Rep. Sam Rayburn being deposed as House majority leader next session due to his endorsement of Vice-President Garner for the presidency in 1940. He notes Rayburn’s long association with Garner and calls ouster reports imagination. Cochran, a loyal New Dealer, states Rayburn is supported by Democratic members and the issue will not be discussed at the party caucus.
United Press reports Aug 16 that talks at Berchtesgaden between Adolf Hitler and the League of Nations High Commissioner for Danzig were described as a failure as Hitler seeks reintegration of Danzig into the Reich.
Bid openings Friday at Denison Hotel will award a about 3 300 000 cubic yards earthwork for a Red River trench linking eight conduits for the Denison dam project. The $60 000 000 work may total around 1 000 000 and attract 70 top contractors from across the nation. The project, including a temporary bridge, aims to start within 20 days and finish by April 1940, employing hundreds.
