Deputies report two intruders broke a rear window at a Gulf service station in the 100 block of North Center Street Sunday morning. They entered during the slackout but fled when lights came back on. Matches lit their path as power failed. Car tracks were found near the back window.
County districts move to dismiss early to allow harvest time as cotton opens fast in the region. Bailey and Dodd City officials report students leaving by 2 pm to work in fields while London Gober and others plan similar early dismissals, with summer terms ending by Friday in many schools.
Cantrell in Fannin County reports two traffic deaths in a week involving out of county residents. One on U S 69 near Trenton and Leonard, a Tyler woman rear ended a parked truck. The other on FM 274 between Mulberry and Ravenna, a truck overturned after the driver lost control. Speed and careless driving blamed.
A bomb exploded in a Dallas Ford on the street near C B Simmons's northeast Dallas home. Detectives say nitro jelly caused the blast, which left a six by eight inch hole in the car floor. Simmons was away, his wife reported. an oil operator, he was traveling to San Francisco then Reno.
Mac Harrison returned from a fishing trip to find vandals shot out seven window panes and 15 light bulbs at his house with air rifles. He plans to fish again this weekend, saying they can come back if they want to. A grass fire struck West Third Street near the Rayford residence early this morning, prompting a call to the fire department.
Texas Attorney General John Ben Shepperd toured 22 East Texas counties amid reports of Klan activity. He said investigators found Klan organizers in multiple counties but local citizens rebuffed them and urged peaceful, legal action. He warned Texans against the Klan and noted strong state penalties for hooded groups. A separate Waco case involved anti Negro and anti Jewish literature, with authorities tracing the writer to a World War I veteran.
Twelve rioting convicts surrendered after Warden Lawrence Delmore Jr backed by armed guards told them they were fools. Ten hostages were released and guards used tear gas to retake control. No injuries were reported.
Merchants interested in participating in the August 25 BBBB Bonham Big Bargain Bonanza are urged to attend a planning meeting Tuesday at 10 30 AM in the American theatre. Harvey Foreman announces the BBBB as a successful event drawing crowds nationwide including California Oregon and Minnesota.
The Bonham Chamber of Commerce transportation committee convenes at 2 PM Tuesday in chamber offices. Chairman Winston Chance urges full attendance by all committee members for the session.
A Denison trucker was crushed when his vehicle overturned on a rural road near Mulberry and Ravenna. Deputies said Reeves lost control, the truck rolled, and he was alone in the cab. His body was taken to Bonham for funeral arrangements.
Fannin county cotton farmers are urged by JOE Richey TEC Bonham manager to file applications at 397 Center Street Bonham for harvest help. Harvest crews with 1 to 35 hands will work on a day haul basis as cotton opens across the county with peak expected by August 22.
Three Fannin county students are among 358 seniors applying for bachelor’s degrees at North Texas State College this month. Bonham residents Mrs Rheta Jaynes Lane and William Herman Adamson plus Mrs Mildred Wilkerson Cook, formerly of Leonard, are slated for summer commencement at 9 p m in the NTSC main auditorium. Lane and Adamson pursue bachelor of business administration while Cook seeks bachelor of science in elementary education.
Americans ran up record debts in the booming second quarter of 1955 while production and personal income rose to new peaks. The Commerce Department warns of soft spots as consumer credit grows and inventories swell, with tax take up and consumer debt reaching all time highs. President Eisenhower and Commerce chief Sinclair Weeks noted the signs of strength and risk in the rapid expansion.
Luther N. Newman has been named purchasing agent for Supreme Trailer company in Bonham. He comes from Gremco Manufacturing in Fort Worth where he worked about eighteen months, succeeding Pat Flynn who became production manager. Newman, his wife Mary Jo Sears Newman and their two children Patricia and Melinda have established residence at 510 West 9th Street.
Bonham residents enjoy cool nights with temperatures dropping into the high 50s and daytime highs near 90. The morning recorded 59 degrees with 85 degrees by 8 am and Sunday’s high reached 92. Clear skies and warmer weather are forecast, while gulf coast rains were reported.
Isolated afternoon and evening thundershowers in the west portion with generally fair conditions elsewhere. Temperatures expected to remain stable through Tuesday.
United Press reports a day of mixed outcomes as families faced tragedy and relief. In Michigan a 12 year old boy Peter Gorham was killed by a sex assault and shooting, while in California six year old Joyce Pike was safely found after kidnapping. A rescue ended in Ohio for Bobby Steele, found unharmed in a gondola car. In Illinois three 4 H Club winners May Painter John and Charles were killed in a head on crash near Havana alongside their mother and another driver.
In McAlester Oklahoma Dr Ben Galbraith a 34 year old heart specialist was convicted of murdering his wife Katherine the all male jury recommended the death penalty. The jury deliberated just over an hour before delivering the verdict after a week long trial that followed Galbraiths prior suicide attempts and the deaths of his wife and three children.
Airman Tommy J. Farmer a weapon mechanic with the 60th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron is stationed at McGhee Tyson AFB Alabama and will join the base entry meet starting Tuesday August 16. Born in Durant Oklahoma he is the stepson of J H House of Trenton New Jersey and entered the Air Force on October 5 1951. He graduated from Weapons Mechanical School at Lowry AFB Denver Colorado and served in Korea. He has been at McGhee Tyson since last October after transfer from Dobbins AFB Marietta Georgia. Airman Farmer is married with one child.
The Miami weather bureau warned of Hurricane Diane with 115 mph winds aimed at Georgia and the Carolinas, prompting evacuations and coastwise alerts as Connie’s damage lingered. Diane was forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 mph, with high winds and pounding tides expected along the coast within 12 to 18 hours.
Myron Hoff of River Sioux Iowa won a national livestock judging contest for feed dealers. He will receive a silver dollar for every ounce registered at the official weighing in Chicago. Hoff weighs 177 pounds, valued at about $2,800 in silver.
