The Indianapolis Sentinel describes an organized gang posting a notice on White paper at a Pearl Street commission house. They copied quotations from nearby firms to place profitable grain and stock orders, stealing returns and earning hundreds of dollars, while officials moved to stop the scheme.
After weeks of delay the city council raised Ed Elliott’s salary to 400 dollars per year plus 25 dollars for extra duties such as reading meters and preparing tax duplicates. A prior proposal suggested 150 dollars, with W A Marsh asking 300 and Tangzeman citing 260. A tie vote and mayoral intervention led to a compromise at 1250 dollars annually, despite earlier cuts and petitions bearing hundreds of signatures.
Two new cases entered civil court on Thursday. William Twibel vs Lucinda Ellison seeks foreclosure of a mortgage and recovery on a given note. Kate Toms vs Maxle Tome constitutes a partition suit. An amended mandamus complaint was argued, then court adjourned as Judge Vaughn was summoned to Fort Wayne.

They noted remonstrances and anticipated a legal fight, while a buried local tale claimed an attorney once profited $11,000 from draining the river and now pushes a similar effort to regain fortune.
A telegram from Christ Hospital Cincinnati informs Bluiffon Irlands of Miss Carrie Grove that her condition is non operative and favorably turning toward full recovery. Rest in bed, extension and fresh air at home are advised, with hospital wards deemed unsuitable for her case. Miss Grove and her mother departed for Cincinnati last Monday for treatment continuation.
Montpelier voters approve a 25000 subsidy for the J C West traction line in a close election by fifty one votes. The Portland Montpelier & Huntington electric line is to begin work immediately and aim to have cars running by spring. Local business leaders expect eventual benefits though some resentment remains.

Dr Cheney wins a full term as city health officer, praised for faithful service and epidemic prevention efforts protecting public health.
A deal completed Friday afternoon transfers title of the property now housing J. Wisehaupt saloon from Walmer heirs to Muncle resident George Hartley. Hartley was present to sign the necessary papers as the sale concluded and the old consideration value is noted.
