William Poffenberger, a molder at the Red Cross workshop, collapsed from heat while finishing a cast. He lay unconscious for hours, was treated by Dr. J W McKinney, and regained awareness around 2 AM. He remains weak but expected to recover.
A stag party in honor of Frank Robinson was hosted at his home nine miles east of the city. Guests in dress suits arrived at 6:40 P.M. and dined at seven after a seven-course meal. Mr. Robinson received a gift as Frank Dailey acted as speaker, bringing tears to the honoree. Attending were L. C. Davenport, Lester Roush, Frank Dalley, W. B. Nimmons, Harry Deam, Del Locke, Will Barr, Hugh Kapp, Ralph Todd, and John Gilliland. Dr. L. H. Cook could not attend due to a call to Montpelier.
Circuit court notes report a suit by Ellis Hamilton and Robert Lambert of Chester township seeking an injunction to halt salt water from an oil well entering a tile drain. Judge Vaughn issued a temporary restraining order with Friday set for argument. Swarm v. Brentlinger awarded $113.40 plus 10 percent in fees.
Judge Erwin of Decatur raised damages in multiple cross land cases against the C B C Railroad. Farmers Samuel E. Siick, E D Robison, John Fridley, and Frank Wright received higher awards, while Portland juries had smaller gains. The railroad plans an immediate appeal and vows a strong contest in higher courts.
The two year old daughter of Will Thi of the Red Cross Manufacturing Co. fell from an open window on the second floor while sitting on the sill. She was carried inside by her mother Uhl and a physician said the injuries were not serious a gash on the tongue and a bruise above the eye were the only wounds. The child was walking about later in the day seemingly unhurt.
Mrs Eliza beth Jones was granted a divorce from Morris O Jones at Huntington. The Liberty Center couple long known for domestic trouble drew a large Wells county audience as Jones produced an iron stove poker she said proved years of brutality. Married since 1869, they parented ten children now grown with families, and the entire clan attended the court session.
Judge Vaughn presided over a busy morning in circuit court. John Brown was sent to the Work school. Ross Allen faced a $1,000 bond in a paternity suit with Hannah Parr and posted a $2,000 certificate of deposit to be held as a cash bond. The foreclose suit by Kerfoot versus Hartman was dismissed after costs. Graves versus Studabaker is moved to Grant county on venue change. Judge Vaughn then departed for Marion for legal matters and to visit his daughter Mrs Patton.
Miss Gustave Michaels faced a missing funds case after about $30 vanished from her room while the family was away. A young lady, the sister of the one suspected, has offered to replace the sum, though the accused herself denies theft. Mrs Michaels regrets not searching the suspect earlier and believes suspicions point to the sister more than the stated d Baker.
A young city store employee has been dismissed after a long hidden defalcation. The Banner notes the act was regrettable though no criminal prosecution will follow, citing the store owner’s high regard for the youth and the desire to keep arrangements private.
City Treasurer Fred Tangeman reports over 400 dollars in monthly electric charges, a rise of more than 20 percent from last month. High demand paired with lagging wiring crews slows installations but no one is defaulting on bills. system operates steadily and Bluffton anticipates long term pride in its electric lighting.
Robert Franklin Taylor died of typhoid fever at home in Domestic Indiana on October 1. He was born November 7, 1891, and was 12 years 10 months 24 days old. Funeral services were held at the residence Monday at 1 p.m. and he was buried in Alberson Cemetery.
Huntington County commissioners on Tuesday named Hiram Ham L L Wisner and David Thomas as viewers for the Little River ditch project locating in Huntington County to assess the drainage work and assess benefits.
The Republican showing at the court house drew a good crowd though smaller than last week’s street fakir. Teddy pictures were shown and billed as true to life. Democrats are urged to attend Dan W Simms speaking at the court house tonight. A Windle, Gatling Gun editor, plans to address Wells county Democrats on Monday evening October 10.
The body of Samuel Smith was returned to Ossian after treatment at Richmond hospital for insanity. He died there from brain softening. He leaves a wife and two children in Ossian. A funeral in Ossian was planned, with interment in the Ossian cemetery. He was a respected citizen with Christian habits and no secret affiliations.
Mrs. John McMillin, widow, about 65, was badly hurt when a cow dragged her by a leading rope after she stepped in a ground loop. She suffered a broken left wrist, dislocated hip, multiple fractures, and severe bruises. Dr. L A Spauling reduced the fractures and hopes for recovery over time despite rheumatism adding to her condition.
Charley Smith, contractor for city street cleaning, is testing a horse drawn street scraping machine built at Feeser’s blacksmith shop. The device scraped unevenly and has flaws. Smith plans remedies and a perfected plan could lead to a patent.
Conductor Joe Ebright of the Interurban had a near miss and was treated by Dr. J W McKinney after severe stomach pains. He ate a green pawpaw near Eaton and was hospitalized briefly, receiving an emetic with temporary relief. He returned home and by morning felt weak but hopeful to resume duties soon.
Levi Mack has filed a petition with Sheriff Johnson asking county commissioners to remove the massive stone steps in front of the courthouse. The petition cites winter ice as a safety risk, shade requiring basement lights, and argues removing the steps would improve appearance. It proposes new entrance stairs from the corridor and lowering the east plaza to sidewalk level to eliminate the tobacco spitting and crowding at the lodge.
From Buffalo a special Erie train passed Monday carrying private cars of President Shonts and President Underwood with E. H. Harriman among other notable passengers. The gathering stirs talk that the C. H. D. and Pere Marquette seek to gain control of Clover Leaf and Erie by merger or other means, with Shonts saying syndicate representatives asked about a price.
Night watchman Williams faced a tense incident about 9:30 PM when a would-be rescuer confronted him over a young woman. Henry drew his revolver after a heated exchange but did not fire. The man followed, threats were exchanged, and the pursuer later left, with no further trouble reported.
In court today a quiet scene prevailed with little business. The treasurer’s office urged tax payment while commissioners adjourned until tomorrow. The Cover case motion to change venue was denied, sending it to Wells Circuit Court. Allen bond set at 1000 dollars. other cases continued or under consideration with complaints filed and demurrers noted.
