Senator Voorhees reports treasury estimates comparing tariff duties across chemicals, earths and glassware, metals, wood, sugar, tobacco, and agricultural products under the Senate plan, the House bill, and McKinley law, using last year’s imports for basis. The ad valorem rates and total duties show Senate figures generally between House and McKinley on most items, with specific per‑item comparisons across chemicals, glassware, metals, wood, sugar, tobacco, and agriculture.

Profits and Wages in Sugar Refining Trust Probe
A critique argues the McKinley era sugar contract favors refiners led by Havemeyer, citing high profits, low wages, and census noncompliance. It accuses the Sugar Trust of price manipulation, tariff protection, and anti trust violations, urging investigations and tighter oversight. The piece contrasts protectionist talk with the sector’s global export activity and calls for enforcement.
