Peel Chestnut Mountain Pumpkin Festival Opens Saturday

The sixth annual Peel Chestnut Mountain Pumpkin Festival unfolds Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Pocahontas Virginia with food arts and crafts pumpkin painting bluegrass and more. Festival spokesman Russell Synan notes growing turnout with visitors from Michigan Oregon Maryland Ohio and Alabama returning residents as well. Children can enter pumpkin painting and judging with over 100 small pumpkins for face painting. Local performers Beckner's Ridge Line Gospel Grass Phillip Bevins the Whites and others will perform along with crafts flea market hayrides and more for families.

Tazewell considered for state and national historic registries

Areas of Tazewell Virginia may join the National Historic Registry and the Virginia Historic Registry after the town council vote to pursue applications. Bettie Byrd St.Clair of the Tazewell Historical Society outlined the plan begun two years ago with a $5,000 local match grant that funded a survey of sites on Main Street North and West Tower Streets Pine Street and nearby. The council noted several old homes and the historic doctor residences with Main Street offices near the courthouse as notable examples.
