New York AP reports stocks fell sharply on fears of weak earnings. Nasdaq closed down 72.05 at 3168.49 after a late bargain rush, remaining well above its morning low and about 35 percent off its March high. Dow fell 110.61 to 10413.79 and S&P 500 declined 22.47 to 1364.55 as earnings in line with expectations weighed on sentiment.
California Superior Court Judge Michael Ballachey ordered Ford to recall up to 1.7 million cars and trucks sold in the state, accusing the automaker of concealing a dangerous ignition module flaw that caused stalling when engines run hot. Ford disputes the need, saying nothing to fix.
The U S Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia set oral arguments for Feb 26 27 in the Microsoft antitrust appeal seeking to split the company into two. The court also ordered briefs with Microsoft to file first by Nov 27 the government reply by Jan 12 and limited page counts for each side.
