Chief of Guards Killed at Collins Colliery in Gunfight
In Thurmond on Sunday evening chief of guards J B Watts was shot by a man named Black Diamond who then exchanged fire with Watts’ aides. The assailant was killed by return fire. Will Washington, Watts, and Black Diamond figures are linked to earlier saloon trouble in Glen Jean and Montgomery. Watts, a Lynchburg native, was a deputy sheriff and longtime Collins Company guard.

Richard Scott of Phillips Mill sold 230 acres of Reading creek coal lands near Womelsdorf West Virginia to President Wright and H C Greer of La Belle Iowa Steel Works for 31200. Parkersburg reports C. T. Caldwell received a telegram from W. M. O. M. Dawson former Republican chairman saying the harmony conference peace committee will arrive October 7 to consider the senatorial district situation. Plans of elopers come to naught in Powhatan
The missing daughter of Mr and Mrs James Wolff of Powhatan reappeared with her parents after elopement plans with a local lover. The couple had arranged to marry after he drew his monthly wages and traveled east. The girl admitted discussing elopement, but returned home with her family.
