Syria and Israel halt buildup as some troops withdraw
In eastern Lebanon both sides paused military buildup and some Syrian troops were seen withdrawing. At the same time Lebanese guerrillas killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three in the central mountains. A U N force report noted a shootout near a south Lebanon house where a Fijian soldier was killed. Observers said Israeli forces were moved back but no pullback occurred on the Israeli side. By week’s end about 35 000 Israeli troops remained in the area with heavy armor and artillery. The clash area and regional moves followed Syrian maneuvers near the Golan Heights and a Syrian missile attack on Israeli aircraft.
