U S Steel Idles McDowell Mines In West Virginia

U S Steel Mining Co. idles two McDowell County mines with 225 layoffs as sagging metallurgical coal demand from U S and European steelmakers and strong export competition reduce orders for Pocahontas Seam coal. No. 9 Mine at Gary and Seneca Mine near Welch shut indefinitely. Remaining McDowell facilities to resume on June 2 with weekly schedules.

Reagan changes mind joins Hands Across America event

President Reagan announced he will participate with Nancy in Hands Across America to raise funds for the hungry and homeless. White House spokesman Speakes said the first family decided after a Thursday night discussion to form a human chain from New York to California to aid the effort. Sunday was proclaimed Hands Across America Day as plans shifted.

Festival opens with dazzling Bluefield fireworks display

The Rocky Top Mountain Festival began with a large fireworks show at Bluefield City Park Saturday night, staged by the Craft Family Shooters of American Fireworks. Sponsorship from Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Norfolk Southern, Bluefield Beverage Co., and Twin State Distributing drew a three-year high turnout. Officials credited promotional efforts and local partners for the crowd surge, while plans for Saturday include a 10-K bike race, foot races, a 5-K run walk, a 1 mile Fun Run, tennis and bowling tournaments, a parachute demonstration, a bodybuilding contest, and arts events at the Bluefield Arts and Crafts Center.
