Major John W. Johnston, long a Confederate veteran and railroad pioneer, died in Richmond at age 65. A native of Botetourt County, he lived in Buchanan and held leadership roles with the Georgia Pacific railroad, Richmond and Danville, James River and Kanawha canal, and helped shape Birmingham Alabama. He served in the Virginia legislature and is survived by three daughters and two sons, including daughter Mary Johnston famous for Prisoners of Hope and To Have and to Hold.
