Israel and Lebanon approved a troop withdrawal accord with plans for twin ceremonies. Syria pledged efforts to block the pact as Lebanon's Parliament voted 80 to 0 with 11 absent and Israel's Knesset 57 to 4 with 45 abstentions, on a U.S. backed agreement.
In Geneva the United States and the Soviet Union begin a new round of arms negotiations with a proposal to cap nuclear warheads in Europe at about 300 each. Yuri Kvitsinsky questions the plan while Washington aims for a mutual ceiling as NATO moves toward deploying Pershing 2 and cruise missiles across Britain and West Germany.
Bristol based United Coal Co. advances liquid coal blending 70 percent ground coal 30 percent water with a secret additive to create a fluid fuel for oil fired boilers. Richard A. Wolfe notes lower cost per BTU versus oil and aims to pilot in a company boiler before broader utility testing.
Princeton officials mark the first anniversary of Naomi Cloud's disappearance as investigators pursue leads across several states and to Peru and South America. Mercer County Prosecutor David Knight and agents say they will not give up and continue examining tips while seeking to bring Cloud and co-defendants to trial for the murder of her husband.
The forecast calls for mostly sunny and cool conditions today with highs in the 60s and northern mountains dipping to the 30s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and warmer with highs in the 70s, followed by showers Thursday and a cooler, clearing Friday. Weekend highs range from the 60s to mid 70s with nightly lows from the upper 30s to 50s.
West Virginia lawmakers open a special session with broad support for a jobs program but no consensus on funding. Governor Rockefeller backs borrowing from the state investment pool to finance part of the plan, with Senate President McGraw leaning favorable while House Speaker Clyde Lee and Finance Chair Monday voice reservations preferring a pay as you go tax approach. Lee questions borrowing as prudent, suggesting a temporary sales tax on food, while Polan Jr says funding from future revenue may be unaffordable.
