The Bluefield College Dramatic Players presented The Patay at Beaver Auditorium to a large grateful audience on Wednesday afternoon. The production drew praise for its ensemble and is slated for another performance that evening, with expectations of record attendance.
Patricia Ann Horn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Herndon, was born at 2627 Kanawha Street Charlestown. Mrs. Herndon, formerly Miss Irene Francisco, and the Herndons are former Bluefield residents.
Shrine clubs sponsor a Friday evening dance at the Masonic temple ballroom Federal street from 9 30 to 1 30 for Masons and their ladies with refreshments and prizes for five couples. Loyal Daughters party follows at First Christian church home of Mrs Ned Bryan Ramsey Street.
Wade P T A held its last meeting of the term at the school Tuesday afternoon. Mrs E R Wilson, president, led the session with song and flag salute. Miss Ellen Johnston read Governor Kump’s Truth and Health Week proclamation. Mrs England praised parents and teachers for cooperation and presented retiring president Mrs DB ft Wilson with a gift for forty years of service.
Mrs Wilson completed two years as president with praise for officers and a $70.06 balance reported by the treasurer. Ninth grade graduates will present a play Young and Healthy Friday at the school auditorium. Hostesses Mrs J B Albright and Mrs K St Wilson invite members to a Thursday gathering at Third Street home.
Mrs Ward led the Bible study and business session at Mrs Tabor's Circle Mre gathering held Wednesday afternoon at Mrs F C Goodall's home on Me Moria avenue with refreshments served. The next meeting will be at BD Hites 808 Augusta Street.
St Marys Guild of Bluefield Virginia will meet this afternoon at 3 oclock with Mrs W W Clary at the rectory on Logan Street. All members are requested to be present.
Preston P T A elected June Rice president for the coming year at the school, with Mrs. Dave Warden as her predecessor. Officers include Vice President Mrs. Margaret Easley, Secretary Irene Cruise, and Treasurer Mrs. J B Wagner. Attendance prizes went to Miss Margaret Bailey’s second grade and Miss Virginia Biven’s fifth grade. Mrs. Nathan Effranett sang and Mr. Charles Nash and Blanch White welcomed a newborn son, Richard Carson, to the family.
The Be Square class of Grace Methodist Church met Tuesday evening at Mrs Bernard Knox’s home with fourteen members and one visitor. Led by Mrs DeBrick they studied Matthew chapter three and planned spring cleaning for the plays room. A basket was prepared for a local needy family and a prize was offered for attendance at the next meeting.
Miss Blanche Miller head of the Bluefield Kindergarten and Continuation school has returned from New York where she attended the forty third annual convention of the Association for Childhood Education. The organization, formed in 1892 as the International Kindergarten Association, now includes the National Council of Primary Education and the Council of Nursery Schools. The convention theme was The Teacher in the Community with speakers from seven foreign countries and 1736 registered members. Social events included luncheons receptions a May day dinner on recreation.
Mrs Rudder's Sunday School class at First Christian Church will meet this evening at 7 30 in the basement. The gathering will be a party and all members are urged to attend.
The third Matoaka bridge session was hosted by Dr and Mrs W B Caldwell. Eleven tables played as Mrs J R Rich and Mrs George Brown of Princeton led North South with 137.5 points. Close purses followed with Wagner and Migs League Muskegon second and others from Princeton Matoaka Springton Winona and Hiawatha. City master points went to Ellett Pearis Rich and Markell plus the Kaseys. Next session set for May 11 at 8 PM with scores tight.
The Delta Beta Kappa sorority of Bluetield College hosts a round dancing barn style dance on Saturday evening May 9 in the college gym from 8 30 to 11 30 with an informal atmosphere and old fashioned barn decor A floor show is planned for 10 30 featuring an attractive lineup of performers.
Mrs Barnes Circle at Bland Street Methodist Church met with one visitor present. The session opened with prayer, featured a devotional and poem, discussed World Outlook articles, and reported by C. Q. Fragger. Refreshments were served. The next meeting will be at Mrs J. W. Warner on Cumberland Road.
Members of the Bluefield Quota club and their guests gathered at the West Virginian hotel for the annual Mother's Day dinner marking the club's twelfth anniversary. The event featured candlelight ceremonies, tributes by past presidents, a string of readings and musical numbers, and a decorated birthday cake as the crowd saluted the club's long history and future aims.
Following the nominating committee report Mrs B E Le Noir chaired the Whitethorn Parent-Teacher association meeting at the school. Officers elected unanimously: President Mrs F N Andrews vice president Mrs Mamie Anderson secretary Miss Catherine Comer treasurer Mrs H Q Caz. Retiring president thanked members for support and praised the year’s constructive work. Food clothing milk and Christmas boxes provided for underprivileged children. Plans for a summer round-up for health tests and inoculations discussed but deferred. Meeting opened with prayer and piano selections by Cuban student Signora Lelia Garcia. College professor M Louthan reviewed a National Parent article in the March issue.
In a teacher magazine discussion on parent child courtesy, Raiged questions asked if parents exploit children for show, fail to thank them for services, and break promises. Prof Lolathan noted parents often fail to model courteous behavior. Mrs Ernest Bennett chaired a report and officers were elected.
The Medical Auxiliary of Mercer county will meet for luncheon and bridge at the Appalachian Agdambly hall Friday May 8 at 1 oclock. A social hour for those who do not play bridge will follow the luncheon.
A compliment to Mrs. Charles Carson formerly Miss Kathleen Thacker, a bridge party and kitchen shower was held Tuesday evening at Aliza beat McCue’s Walton avenue home. Four tables of games produced high prizes for Miss Louise Light and Mrs. Addie Hageman, with Mrs. Carson receiving many gifts. Green and yellow decor and a tempting ice course completed the event.
Concord State Teachers' college Athens music department and Glee club presented a Tuesday evening concert in the college auditorium directed by Misa Ella Holroyd with Miss Sybil Cartwright as accompanist. Soloists Hortense Martin Helie Bowman performed with violinists Helen Gibernon Virginia Lee Albert and Ricardo Martin. Virginia Lee Albert Frances Barret and Jack Gallian sang as soloists in another number. The Martinaleters performed a trio feature and the program closed with a cantata.
The Bland Street Methodist church elhost featured soloists Mrs G Harris and G Williamson with strong ensemble work. The audience praised the performers for their fine execution and overall effort. A rehearsal is set for 7:30 this evening, James Elmer Brown directing and urging full attendance.
Mrs TT Albert attended a concert in Athens with daughter Virginia Lee Albert taking a prominent role. George Bowen left for Welch to join Kingaton Pocahontas Coal company. Dr A S Richardson of Grundy is a patient at Bluefield sanitarium. Dr Edwin Wade of Bluefield College spoke in Matoaka on The History of the Bible. Dr Samuel W Moore, wintering in Fort Pierce, Fla, plans Bluefield arrival next Tuesday. Additional society on page 10.
