The final performance of The First Commandment, staged by the Lutheran guild, drew a larger audience than prior shows at the Ramsey auditorium. Milas Madelyn ToteRes, Wilbur Inskip, and the cast delivered fine acting with rich costumes as Nativity scenes and Christmas hymns accompanied by a joyful Hallelujah chorus. Mrs C. W. Pace, guild president, lauded the effort and the cast later enjoyed a party at Ramsey school with refreshments.
Mr and Mrs BE Brewster of Bluefield Virginia announce the marriage of their daughter Mary Ellen to Alvin B Carter of Bluefield West Virginia. The ceremony was held Tuesday evening at the couple's home with Reverend Hey Hughes officiating. Mary Ellen is a Graham high school and St Luke's hospital school of nursing graduate. Alvin is a Beaver high school and Emory and Henry college graduate employed by Bluefield Supply company. The couple will reside at 12 West Street Bluefield Virginia.
The Bluefield Woman's Club, led by president Mrs J L Black, hosted a spring dinner meeting at the Y quarters. The program featured a demonstration of the Children’s Theater movement with multiple acts, poetry readings, music, and previews by local students and artists, highlighting civic youth development goals.
This evening at 6 the Bluefield Quota club hosts its annual Mother’s Day dinner at the Weeat Virginian hotel. A brief program appropriate to the occasion will be presented.
Delegations from Talid, Bluewell, Midway and Caffee's Chapel are expected to attend the 7:48 evening service at West Christian Church. Members of the total church and Sunday School are urged to attend in family and class groups. This last midweek loyalty service aims for the largest attendance. Captains are to bring their groups if possible. The program will feature "Some Pertinent Questions" with a fine boys and girls presentation.
A Saturday afternoon party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Endle B. Caldwell on Larch Street honored their daughter Mildred Caldwell on her eighth birthday. Guests included Richard Poe John Caldwell Billy Linkou Hugh Caldwell Betty Sue Falrehuds Mildred Caldwell Donald Blankenship Billy Hambrick Charlotta Caldwell Virginia Blankenship and Virginia Caldwell with games, contests, gifts and refreshments.
Mrs Chester Mustard's circle of Bland Street Methodist church will meet at the home of Mrs H R Mitty at 424 North Street this afternoon. The meeting date or host differs from the earlier announcement naming Mrs 8 0 Sublette.
Northfork chapter 99 Order of the Eastern Star held a covered dish gupper with about eighty guests including visitors from Bhiefield Pocahontas Vis Chicinnati Preeburen Ky Matewan and local members. After business, the Graded Glee club performed three numbers with Mina Brown Noel Mise Gertrude Thompson and Mrs Bessie Madera at the piano singing a Mother's Day duet. A Memorial service is planned for May 15 at the next stated meeting, with public invitation. Departed members to be honored include Mrs Gertrude Moore past worthy matron and Mrs Janet Wilson of Peterstown West Virginia.
Miss Mary Ann Payne of West Virginia led a C A R Senior group meeting at her North Street residence. She spoke on the C A R convention in Washington where she was a delegate and piano soloist. Jane Elizabeth Rhoads presided, James Kahle led the pledge, with plans announced for a card party at Appalachian Hall on May 21 at 2:30.
St Luke's Alumnae association met Monday evening with Miss Charlotte Farris of 1716 Vineyard Street presiding in the president's absence. About twenty members attended as Mrs C G Guinn spoke on hobbies. Following the program, refreshments were served.
An event sponsored by the Junior Guild of Christ Episcopal Church, previously set for Friday, has been postponed to Friday, May 22. The notice notes the change was announced earlier this week and affects attendees and schedules.
A party at Dennis Nicewander’s home celebrated his seventh birthday with games and prizes for Charles Kidd James Proffitt and Douglas Akers. Gifts were given to the honorees friends and lollipops and refreshments were served. Attendants included Douglas Akere James Proffitt Frank Oliver Jr Edward Perdue and others with Mrs Nicewander assisted by her daughter Lucille and Miss Beulah Sanda.
Announcement of altered meeting venue for Mrs H Shorts Circle No 1 Trinity Methodist Church. Meeting moved to be with Mrs EK M Gillespie at 435 College Avenue this afternoon at 2 30.
A special loyalty service at TH8 features boys and girls from the First Christian church presenting songs and Bible drills. Four youths, Emily Ashworth Mary Cheyney Belton Vengen and Billy Vengen, earned top places in the state musical contest at Fairmont and provide the evening’s music. Families and friends are invited and all members urged to be loyal.
E. L. Phillips of Matoaka addressed the Bluefield Rotary club on the effects of alcohol, based on a Matoaka Kiwanis survey. He warned of harm to the human system and urged attendance at upcoming local events and services.
Mrs Dean Hosmer's team won by one point over Mrs L B Tierney Jr's squad in the opening Ladies' Day golf event at Bluefield Country Club. Hosmer led with two 1 point scores and a 44 point, while Tierney's writers tallied 44, 1, and 2 points. a playoff tie remains for a final result and a donated golf ball to the winner. Thirty three ladies attended the opening luncheon and comments anticipate an active season.
Triangle Club held thirteen tables Monday at Appalachian hall for the Bluefield Baby Clinic tournament’s first round. Play resumes next Monday. entry open. North-South winners Lenett and Wagner with 116 points. East-West winners Flynn and desamer with 107. Other top finishers listed. Junior G A meeting at College Avenue Baptist church after school at Mrs H L Black’s home.
The Junior guild of Christ Episcopal church meets this afternoon with Mrs Lea Anderson at 514 College avenue at 2 30 o clock. Attention is directed to the change of time and place.
Mrs F L Black president of the Bluefield Woman's club and former WV federation president will attend the federation of Woman's clubs convening next Wednesday evening at Wheeling. Mrs L B Willyoung of the Princeton club and former district president and Mrs W H Fitzhugh of the McCamas club will also attend.
Dr FW Bilger of Maybeury has reentered the Bluefield sanitarium as a patient. Arthur White of Ballats Street is also a patient at Bluefield sanitarium. Mr and Mrs EB Meyer of Wyoming Street left Tuesday for Norton to attend the funeral and burial of A F Litts, who was a brother in law to Mr Meyer.
