Pravda describes a night April 25 explosion at the Chernobyl plant that ignited a blaze reaching the reactor. Firefighters fought 90 foot flames as boots sank in molten bitumen, and authorities report panic among some workers while thousands nearby stayed calm. Pripyat is described as a near ghost town.
U S officials say radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl disaster drifted over the United States and Canada on Monday, with rain likely contaminated on the Pacific Coast and Midwest. Ground readings remained at background levels, though atmospheric samples offshore showed barely elevated radioactivity.
The seven major industrial democracies issued a joint statement calling terrorism an international scourge to be fought relentlessly. They singled out Libya as a state sponsor of terrorism, while stopping short of endorsing military action or sanctions. Reagan pressed for the stance and outlined his thoughts on terrorism to fellow leaders.

Nationwide personal income rose 5.3 percent in 1985 to an average of 13 451 per person. West Virginia adults earned 10 112 per year, placing the state 49th. Neighboring Virginia saw 6.6 percent growth to 14 164, ranking 12th, while New England led with 6.6 percent and 15 387 per person.
The stock market rose Monday extending a rebound after last week’s decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, down sharply in the prior week, recovered with gains driven partly by lower interest rates and renewed investor optimism.
A federal appeals panel in Richmond dismissed Daniel F. Bloch’s civil rights action accusing Mountain Mission School in Grundy of abuse and obstruction of testimony. The 4th Circuit held Bloch failed to prove a conspiracy by court officials and that orphans fall outside the act’s protected class, noting Klan era intent does not apply to economic status victims.
