Northfork forward John Davis, a 6-2 junior, fuels a 16-game win streak as the Blue Demons chase the Class AA title at Charleston Civic Center. He balances basketball with a standout football season, averaging 16.1 ppg and contributing on both ends as he eyes a showdown with Williamson star Mark Cline. Davis vows a strong performance to honor coach Henry Winkfield and push Northfork toward a first state crown in years.
Graham G-Men fall 4-3 in eight innings to Patrick Henry after seven errors. The 6-foot-9 senior center blocked three Stonewall shots in the final three minutes, helping Logan erase an early deficit and extend its season series lead to three wins. Stonewall Jackson, 21-4, rallied with seven straight fourth-quarter points before faltering.
No. 13 Villanova defeats Iowa 54 53 in a tense semifinal as Gary McClain pins in a one-and-one for the go ahead and Ed Pinckney seals the win with a rebound after late Iowa free throws. Stan Wagner and Stewart Granger score key points for Villanova while Greg Stokes adds late free throws for Iowa.
Mullens Rebels powered by Herbie Brooks who scored 50 points setting a West Virginia state tournament single game record in a 87-69 semifinal win at Charleston Civic Center over Parkersburg Catholic. He added six assists and 11 rebounds while Mullens advanced to face Huntington Vinson for the title. Vinson had crushed Moorefield to reach the final.
In Syracuse, defending NCAA champion North Carolina with All American Michael Jordan defeated Ohio State 64 to 51. Ohio State led at halftime and again late in the second half before UNC pulled away. Joe Concheck scored 14 for the Buckeyes as the Tar Heels advance toward the Final Four.
