City motorcycle cop survives narrow escape on First street
City motorcycle officer T. R. Jewell was dragged 24 feet after a sedan driven by Roy Saunders veered onto the wrong side of First street around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. Saunders was charged with reckless driving, fined $25 by Magistrate Carl J. Jones. Jewell escaped unharmed though his motorcycle sustained minor damage as the Virginian passenger train stood at the station.

Testimony Ends in Proffitt Suit in Bluefield Circuit Court
The trial of W. Al Proffitt against New Amsterdam Casualty Co and Bluefield Police Officer Charles H. Fox concluded Wednesday afternoon. A wave of minor crimes leads McDowell County officers to arrest more than 20 persons for various offenses. Three Smithers brothers and Alonzo Barnett, all of War, were arrested Tuesday on cattle stealing charges tied to Fayette County and transported to the county for preliminary hearings. A Fayette farmer reported cattle thefts and identified suspects with Fayette officers, who later turned the trio over to Fayette authorities. The racket had been active for months, with a lead emerging only last week.

Fatal fight ends with Branham death in North Welch
Witnesses told prosecutors that Sunday night fight between Mrs. Elizabeth Branham 41 and Hart Waldron of North Welch caused Branham to suffer a skull fracture. She died in a local hospital Tuesday morning. Waldron is not charged yet as investigators continue.
