Steelworkers Approve Concession Pact Cutting Wages

PITTSBURGH AP The United Steelworkers ratified a 41 month concession pact cutting wages by 1.25 dollars an hour and reducing benefits to save jobs amid foreign competition. About 250 local presidents voted 169 to 63 with three abstentions. The deal, effective immediately, ends the prospect of a industry summer strike and replaces an August expiration contract. It lowers wage levels, eliminates cost of living raises, and trims holidays and vacation time. 143000 workers laid off in February and 21500 on reduced schedules. Production below 50 percent capacity. Union calls the agreement an urgent recovery contribution while seeking federal aid to curb imports.
