Michael Reed, 21, of Powhatan, died after a head on crash at 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Route 52 near the Mercer McDowell line. A 1989 Nissan pickup driven by Kenny East crossed the center stripe and hit Reed's Ford Escort. East was treated for eye injuries at Bluefield Regional Medical Center and was listed in stable condition.
In Charleston the state Senate approved a bill prohibiting funding abortions for welfare recipients and allowing funding only in rape or incest cases with timely reporting, sending the measure to the House. Lawmakers also approved a scaled back economic development plan cutting funding to 11.1 million and reallocating 5 million for dam projects, 2.6 million for sewers, 0.5 million for airports, and 0.75 million for a Wayne County armory, while a timber industry bill and a Governor's Office restructuring moved forward.
