The Mercer County assessor's reappraisal staff resumes county canvas on Monday starting in Beaver Pond District and Athens Corporation. They will later cover Plymouth and Jumping Branch Districts. Workers wear name tags signed by Mercer County Assessor Winifrey G. Shrewsbury. vehicle license numbers used are on file with the Sheriff's Department. The Madisonians from James Madison University will give a Tuesday 8 p.m. concert at the Bluefield High School Auditorium. Admission is 4 dollars for adults and 2 dollars for students and seniors.

Mercer County Board of Education hearings on reductions in force for maintenance workers and bus operators drew fire from Harold Smith of the West Virginia Education Association. He argued nine of ten terminated coordinators must be posted for reclassification, while officials said no vacancies exist. The district says the policy allows reclassification and that cuts are based on seniority and required eliminations. Hearings address separation and consistency amid ongoing reductions in maintenance staff and bus operators with more expected among professionals.
