Court Upholds Life Sentence in Threats Case
The West Virginia Supreme Court affirmed a life prison term for William Jones, a repeat offender convicted in Morgan County of threatening a Sears repairman during a 1989 incident. The court ruled no time limit exists on prior felonies for habitual criminal sentencing, even if one conviction is old. The decision notes the deterrent aim of recidivist law requires considering older felonies. In a separate ruling, the court decided only one owner must surrender a driver’s license for 90 days when a jointly owned vehicle lacks insurance, reversing a DMV order against Robert Williams and his wife.
