Baltimore June 25 Bryan defeated for Democratic national convention chair as talk swirls around Clark dark horse candidacy. Roosevelt hand feared if a conservative or reactionary candidate chosen. Wilson delegates unite behind Bryan. Clark supporters push for Clark or Roosevelt aligned progressive.
Mig. Etta Kennard, wife of a Red Jacket farmer, confessed to Prosecutor Rhodes that she and Mrs. Elbert Whit t aided in the murder of Farmer Hoskins on the Red Jacket porch night of June 56. She said Neagara planned the killing, and Whitt fired five shots after taking Hoskins’ gun. Kennard and Whit t remain in jail as fugitives from justice.
Cardinal Gibbons prayed at the opening of the Democratic national convention in Baltimore. He asked God to guide the president and the assembly toward justice, liberty, and reverence for the law, urging unity, mutual respect, and restraint of vice as delegates seek a candidate for chief magistrate.
Baltimore June 23 heavy rain delayed proceedings as delegates filled Hall. Senator Kern Indiana backed Bryan for temporary chairman amid cheers. Parker nominated then withdrawn, Bryan ultimately elected temporary chair with 506 votes as Oklahoma delegation pressed for poll results.
Everett Wash June 25 Miss Anna A Malley socialist leader and writer of Hyverett formerly of New York will head the socialist state ticket in Washington she is nominated for governor over Richard Winseh by a majority of votes in the referendum count
Parker and O'Gorman are cited with voting counts against West Virginia Bryan supporters as the convention adjourns briefly amid disorder. Judie Parker interrupts to suspend reading his keynote, then resumes later in the evening with close audience focus before nominations and adjournment to noon the next day.

Oyster Bay N Y June 25 With the progressive party organization under way Theodore Roosevelt returned home from Chicago smiling and in fighting trim He said work would be pushed with full steam Col Roosevelt pleased at news from Baltimore He believed Democratic divisions could aid the new party if they appear He will defer steps until the Democratic convention ends The temporary committee on organization meeting would be postponed until after the Democrats name their ticket and a date for the national convention is set
In Baltimore on June 25 Francis J Heney of California and Charles R Crane of Chicago conferred with William J Bryan for about fifteen minutes. The three men arrived and departed by a private elevator and officials declined to discuss the incident.
Charleston West Virginia hosts its first aviation meet beginning today and running until Thursday. Flights are made by Oscar Brindley of Ohio and Eugene Heth of Michigan in Wright biplanes and by Paul Peck of West Virginia in a Columbia biplane.
West Virginia sees local rains on Wednesday and Thursday with likely fair conditions afterward. Virginia reports unsettled conditions with mainly local showers on Wednesday and Thursday, light variable winds, mostly south.
Baltimore June 25. Disorder on the floor forced an early adjournment of the first day of the Democratic national convention. Bryan was not present as the resolutions committee adjourned toward 2 am and committees were ordered to meet again in the morning. Major figures named to organize include Kern, James, Culberson, and Burke with Bell elected chair of the credentials committee.
Dippe France June 25. David Bruce Brown of New York won the first half automobile grand prize at dawn this morning. He completed 453 miles in six hours thirty six minutes thirty eight seconds. He did not represent the United States, driving an Italian Fiat.
In White Plains on June 25 Harry K. Thaw testified five hours under cross examination by William T. Jerome. Jerome pressed him on the Peroni anniversary and the killing, prompting objections from Thaw and Clarence J. Shearn. Judge Keogh largely upheld Jerome's mental examination line, but Thaw remained composed and avoiding agitation.
Montreal reports public interest in Premier Borden's voyage to England aboard the Royal George. Accompanying him are John M. Hazen, Charles J. Doherty, L. P. Pelletier, Admiral Kingsmill, and A. K. Blount. The trip targets imperial naval policy and Ottawa’s stance for Canada.
In Charleston West Virginia on June 25 a notice was served on coal operators at Paint Creek announcing that an injunction petition will be filed Thursday in Kanawha circuit court by seven miners. The action targets New River Collieries Paint Creek Paint Creek Kanawha Imperial Lackawanna and Standard Splint companies for maintaining special officers viewed as a public nuisance.
Philadelphia June 25 The combined vote of 25 000 members of the Brotherhood of Trainmen Order of Railway Conductors and Brotherhood of Firemen and Enginemen east of Pittsburgh is under tabulation after a three day count. Officials say at least 96 percent favor a strike if grievances remain unresolved. The result will be presented to S C Long general manager for possible talks. A strike appears unlikely at this time.
A United States Geological Survey report details mastodon fossils found near Pekin plus seven coal beds in the Peoria quadrangle. It notes coal mining history since 1906, local brickmaking, artesian wells, and salt and sulphur waters used for drinking and baths with a call to obtain the full report from the director in Washington.
New York reports the marriage of Mrs F Delaplaine Amisackahi Hamilton Fish at the bride's Fifth Avenue home. The groom is the youngest son of the famed Hamilton Fish, former secretary and New York governor. The bride, widow of Gustave Amsinck, has a niece married to J Bruge Ismay of the White Star Line. This is Mr Fish's second marriage and his bride's third matrimonial venture.
London reports Mrs Emmeling Pankhurst militant suffragist leader freed from Holloway jail due to health breakdown from hunger strike. She was sentenced May 22 at the Old Bailey to nine months for conspiracy and malicious damage to property. Fellow prisoner Mrs Pethwick Lawrence was also sentenced and forcibly fed.
Theodos Roosevelt arrived in Oyster Bay after a Chicago run on the Twentieth Century at 9 45 this morning. He went straight to his editorial rooms then departed for Oyster Bay this afternoon. He said he would not issue a statement today but expects to speak in a week when he returns to attend a meeting of a selected group to conduct his third party.
