The Labor Department reports May prices remained stable while factory workers’ take home pay rose to a record high. Secretary James Mitchell notes the combination signals national price stability, rising employment, and stronger consumer livelihoods despite inflation concerns.
Announcement of impending Pentagon hierarchy changes followed by a White House note naming Secretary of the Army Robert Stevens. Gen Monato and other officials were reportedly considering candidates, with Reuben B. Robertson Jr. among those mentioned from Ohio.
The Air Force discharged Col. Patrick W. Hayes under conditions other than honorable after he linked with a German woman tied to Soviet espionage in Berlin. NEW YORK, June 23. Augustine Rivera planned a barbecue and bought a fat pig for 60 dollars. He kept it in his Bronx basement apartment until neighbors complained of squealing. Magistrate William Strong gave a suspended sentence for harboring a pig without a license. The judge quipped that the pig spoke up when it died.
Severe weather drenched Bluefield as a 20 minute rainstorm overflowed sewers and flooded streets. Lightning struck the old Peery Building injuring a cornice that fell on Bland Street. No injuries were reported and the structure remained intact.
Loretta Young, 41, will have abdominal surgery at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard after sufferingperitonitis. She has been confined since April 10 and will receive a date for surgery once she gains five pounds, according to her press agent.
A medical panel urged continuing polio vaccination with the Salk vaccine, favoring a staged schedule over two to three shots in the first year and a possible halt only if a safer vaccine exists. Dr. Rivers advised caution for those with family polio or mild illness as Basil O Connor defended vaccine safety and school inoculation programs.
Buenos Aires June 3 W President Juan D Peron’s cabinet resigned to permit a government reorganization. The move follows a brief navy and Marine revolt in which army forces suppressed the uprising. Strong support remains from CGT and Peronista parties. The army issued a renewed pledge of loyalty.

McAlester Ohio June 23 A district court jury found Dr Ben T Gailbraith sane and capable of standing trial for murder in the deaths of his wife and three children The all male jury returned the verdict unanimously after deliberating an hour and forty four minutes There were four days of testimony and closing arguments Dr Gailbraith a 34 year old heart specialist was not in the courtroom at the verdict
U S Steel offered an average wage increase of more than 10 cents per hour to the CIO United Steelworkers, who rejected it as inadequate. Union President David McDonald said workers refuse to be treated as second class citizens and prepared for around the clock talks.
In Charleston a 18 year old, Mrs Jo Ann Hautem Frazier, testifies she will testify against her father Frank A Hautem 48 of Tucson in the death of his wife Josephine Graham 4 The Arizona state had asked her to appear she initially refused due to travel funds and a ill son The judge suggested the state pay travel costs The case began after police reclassified the December death from a possible hit and run to murder charges against the husband The prosecutor noted they would arrange travel and lodging for the witness and care for her child
The William and Mary Board of Visitors will meet in special session in Williamsburg on June 23 to study student grievances against college administration. Rector James M. Robertson called the session after former student leaders delivered a nine page report to state officials alleging broken promises by President Alvin Duke Chandler. Chandler declined comment.
At the United Nations conference in San Francisco Chinese Foreign Minister George Yeh denounces communism as a world peace threat and urges the UN to confront it without appeasement. France's Antoine Pinay rejects Moscow peace terms and maintains NATO base stances amid Asia and Europe tension.
In Giles County near Narrows Virginia a 32 year old man Clarence Wilburn of Pearisburg was killed when the car he rode in fell 100 feet from a dirt road. Driver Billy Austin of Pearisburg about 25 was unhurt. Austin said he was forced toward the edge by a passing car. The accident happened about 5 p.m. Sheriff Emory Johnston investigated.
Amon G. Carter, publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and famed as the range boss of West Texas, died at age 75 after prolonged illness. He was nationally and internationally known in politics, industry, aviation, and entertainment and had recently returned from New York where he attended the American Newspaper Publishers Association meeting.
Washington reports say the United States Britain and France are ready to discuss Far Eastern problems at a summit with Russia next month if the Soviets insist. Molotovs UN speech has cooled hopes of easy East West détente and the Western trio plans to block Far East talks without another invitation. Joe Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles approved blocking any Soviet push to broaden the talks to include Red China.
The State Corporation Commission approved a rate increase for General Telephone Co. of the Southeast based in Bluefield. New charges raise most categories by 25 cents to several dollars with a 2.50 monthly rise for business lines and 0.50 for one party residential lines. An extra 25 cents may be added on bills after conversion to dial, plus a 10 cent fee for local pay stations. The company serves Bluefield Grundy Pocahontas Richlands Cedar Bluff and Tazewell.
Senate investigators reopened an inquiry into alleged corruption in armed forces uniform procurement. Sol Schlesinger of New York denied paying or receiving bribes while refusing to disclose his finances. Col. Shirley and subcommittee members pressed for records as witness Robert Spott testified about his postgovernment income and links to Schlesinger. The hearing featured dramatic exchanges and was adjourned to a later date.
