Guerrilla Leader Predicts Sandinista Collapse by Year End
Edgar Chamorro Coronel, head of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force, says the FDN's 7,000 fighters and Misura's 3,000 to 4,000 guerrillas will push the Sandinista government to negotiations by year end. He cites economic ruin, border raids, and external aid dynamics as key factors shaping the conflict.

Shultz Sends Habib Back To Middle East
Secretary of State George P. Shultz announced special envoy Philip C. Habib would return to the Middle East to push Syria to withdraw troops from Lebanon. A second envoy, Morris Draper, may visit Damascus as Syria has refused Habib. Shultz cautioned progress in arms talks with the Soviet Union and noted concerns over Syria potentially seizing control of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Yasser Arafat. He spoke on the eve of a 12 day trip to Asia, with a brief London layover, saying no Middle East stop was planned. Israel has agreed to a pullout, but Syria has not budged and seeks dialogue through diplomatic channels.
