Wythe County Youths Win Honors At Virginia FFA Convention
Two Wythe County boys from George Wythe FFA chapter William A. Turley and Ned A. Umsberger were named top winners at the Virginia FFA annual convention at VPI. Turley earned the dairy and Umsberger the livestock award from a field of 8,000 members, receiving $1000 cash awards. Umsberger, son of T O Umberger of Wytheville, owns eight registered short horn cows and nine Hampshire sheep, with 15 lambs produced and 25 steers fed in a year, and investments totaling about 3280 dollars. Turley is the son of T A Turley of Wytheville, with investments over 4000 dollars and ownership of four dairy animals, plus other livestock holdings.

Officials Retake Russell Escapee After Major Breakout
A large team of more than a dozen Virginia officers recaptured 22 year old Nathan Thomas of Drill Virginia, an escapee from Dickenson County jail who was linked to eight car thefts across Virginia West Virginia Kentucky and Ohio. He was found in a stolen 1952 DeSoto at Bee Virginia near the Buchanan County line and returned to his cell. Thomas allegedly escaped by washing his shirt and sliding down a hose tied to jail bars. He faces larceny charges in Buchanan and arson in Russell and may be indicted in Dickenson County where the escape occurred.

Missing mental patient found near Waynesboro Virginia
A two day search by more than 200 people for Mrs. Richard Kerns of Winchester ended when a Virginia National Guardsman found her unharmed on a mountain slope near Waynesboro. She was located within 50 yards of the car she left Sunday and taken to Western State Hospital in Staunton after minor injuries.

State Gasoline Dealers Consider Fight On Tax
In Clarksburg on June 21 the West Virginia Retail Gasoline Dealers Assn announced an inquiry into challenging the constitutionality of the one cent gasoline tax hike from five to six cents.
