Southern states edge forward in education gains share declines

The Southern Regional Education Board reports progress after a 12 year drive across 16 states. Despite near doubling in public school spending since the 1980s, the share of tax dollars for education fell in late 1990s in 11 states. The Greenbrier meeting in White Sulphur Springs aired concerns that funding alone won’t guarantee better schools, even as prekindergarten access expands from 80,000 to 400,000 children across 14 states. Governor Cecil Underwood noted unexpected growth in student numbers and projected enrollment growth slowdown in five years.
