Medicare patients can challenge hospital discharge decisions
Medicare patients have a right to question a hospital discharge when recovery is incomplete. DRGs set stay guidelines, not fixed limits, and patients may request a written explanation and appeal to the Peer Review Organization if they believe discharge is too soon. If PRO sides with the hospital a Notice of Noncoverage may be issued and appeals may proceed to an Administrative Law Judge for disputes over $200 or more.
