Deepwater gold bar hints at 1622 fleet find off Florida
An underwater robot retrieved a one pound eight ounce gold bar from 1500 feet south of Key West, bearing official Spanish seals. Marine archaeologist Robert Marx says the item likely comes from a 1622 hurricane fleet, mirroring gold from the Atocha. Seahawk Deep Ocean Technology, founded by Marx, located the bar during a survey 75 miles offshore as a prelude to excavation led by Dan Bagley III.
